Variation on the classic noob question...
Ok, I've been lurking for a while and have read the nuomerous recommendations regarding best bang-for-buck on new cars (some say tires, some say up/down pipe, etc.) -- so many options my head is spinning! (But thanks to everyone by the way, the info is great!)
I'm the proud owner of a new 03 WRX _automatic_ (why? combination of being a SoCal commuter and sharing time with a wife who has stick-phobia), and I've never had a car this fast, nor have I ever had the desire to modify one of my cars...until now (heh, heh)
IN addition to the classic "what do you recommend -- most of which I can get from the recent noob post, I was wondering if y'all might nswer my dumb question:
How do you pas the smog test (I live in CA)? Do I keep my stock parts and once a year stick'em back in for the test? Are there mods that are CA emissions friendly? Which of the mods y'all are recommending won't cause me to fail? Which ones are the simplest to temporarily "undo" for the test?
Thanks in advance, and apologies for typos (I've been up since about 3:30 am Friday)

Hi Joe,
For $1,200, Vishnu Stage 0 will give you 50+ hp, a really big smile on your face, and should still pass CA emissions. If you really worried about emissions, I would recommend getting a Ecutek reflash (25 whp on a stock car with stock exhaust).

If you're on a budget, you can get a manual boost controller and a boost gauge for ~$100 and fall in love with your car all over again.

Thanks for the recommendation -- Vishnu is a name that's coming up a lot in my research (well, that, Scoobysport and MRT).
I followed the link and that sounds great ---
Has anyone of y'all out there gone stage zero on an automatic though? I'm not much of a car genius, but I would assume the modifications are geared toward manual transmissions and human shifting intellect. What'll happen if I subject the EAT to something like the stage zero mod? Will it adapt to take maximum advantage?
Any testimonials (or alternate opinions -- just FYI, my personal preference is in the low end kick -- SoCal traffic rarely lets me hit the top end safely, but I love the agility of a good low end punch to drive rings around slowpokes!)

Just in case anyone's lurking on this thread...
I just came across a thread on their forum I missed in my initial search -- people have gone stage zero on 4EAT (the post was from a WRX wagon owner), so obviously it's possible and ok, I guess...
Just to strike while the iron;s hot -- any idea how many stages I can go before having to "untune" to survive CA emissions....
There was mention earlier of going stage zero....higher (or alternate tuning house) anyone?
