up-pipe help - alloy or stainless steel?
hey I just made a purchase of a GRUPPE-S up-pipe for $139 and it is shipping as we speak. I was all anxious and excited until I paid a visit to my local Rally Subaru dealorship and spoke to the technician about putting in up-pipes. Other than the shear labor that will cost $230Can, he says that I should be careful of Stainless Steel because once he "gets it on" he can't take it off. Then my question is: "for what reasons will I need to take it off in the future?" and he says if I need to "replace some sensors near there" - what..I don't know. He says it will be near impossible to take it off without shearing/busting it off...he recommends the alloy type such as the Perrin up-pipe ($250).
Mind you I still have not gotten an answer from Gruppe-S whether there up-pipe is stainless steel or some aluminim alloy.
So my question is, what have you guys heard / experienced? and what reasons should I ever need to replace the catless up-pipe once I got it in?

Nope. None. The only sensors near the uppipe is the EGT (on it) and the O2 sensor in the exhaust headers. Never heard of anyone having too much difficulty getting it off. As long as you put gaskets on it shouldn't sieze to the turbo or exhaust headers. With a little WD-40 or liquid wrench, getting the bolts out has never been much of a problem.
I'm not gonna argue with a real mechanic, but I wouldn't worry. I put on a stainless.
edit: I don't know of any uppipes that are made of Aluminum, anyway. The Perrin is 321 Stainless Steel.

thanks EtchyLives...that's some good info. Once I put it in, I won't want to remove it anyways..unless something goes wry.
So the up-pipe is bolted on..or is it welded in?
and what is the difference between a gruppe-s for $139 and the Perrin uppipe for $250??

I have installed over 156 upipes in the last two years. Most of them have bin Vishnu and all of them have bin SS metal. They bolt in and they come out. I have not delt with the gruppe s uppipes but there downpipes don't fit perfectly. They do fit but there is alot of ajusting. Where other pipes just slip in and bolt on.
