Is Turbocharging my Impreza L worth it?
I have a '98 Imprezza L with a 2.2L sohc engine. My question is: is it worth turbocharging it or swaping out the engine with an ej20t or ej22t or even just the ej25. If it is worth putting in a turbo what are all the mods i'd have to make for the car to accept a turbo... oh and keep in mind that i have very limited technical expirence (the only car i've worked on is a '74 f-100 putting in a new clutch all by myself, but it only took me a couple hours to figure out what i was doing so i can learn) so if you could just point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Your best bet is to swap in an already turbo charged engine. You get from the factory a more reliable design, and less headache from you not having to get custom parts made.
But your engine swap questions are nothing compared to the drivetrain issues that are going to come up Are you going to stick with FWD or move up to AWD?

I thought all Subbies including the L are AWD? It's not worth all the hassle to fit a turbo into a L engine, is there even a kit available? anyway, I would swap in a WRX engine. You will need a new hood or install a FMIC though. But start from a more potent engine is the way to go, and if you planned to keep it stock, the WRX engine can last a lot longer than a boosted 2.2L SOHC...

If not AWD, sell it and buy a AWD or 2.5 RS. There are many turbo kits that I have seen all over the internet and magazines for the 2.5 RS. One kit I remember was 215 whp. The prices were not too bad either. Good luck man.

They don't make any non-awd cars, anyways i ahve come to the conclusion that i can't really affoard to really mod my car... its probably not even worth it i mean its a hatchback (NOT A WAGON!!!!!) and everything maybe someday soon i'll trade it in on a used RS or probably by the time i have any money, a WRX

If you really want to fit an older car with a new engine - a good idea in my book - The best way is to put a WRX engine in. This is also smog legal in all states because the engine and ECU are newer and less polluting.
Good Luck!
ps - A WRX engine in a older Suby is FUN!

FWD was the standard and AWD was an option on the SVX, at least in 1995.
