Neither of those would be the best

The better of those 2 would be the VF 34 though, its slightly bigger.

Forced Performance Green, that from what I have heard is the best. Out of those 2 I would get a VF-34 and send it to deadbolt to have it ported and polished and ceramic coated. That is what I am doing. I will keep you posted.

Porting and polishing gives the turbo better flow charachteristics, more power, less spool time. The VF-39 is a plug and play. STi injectors, upgraded fuel pump, and a turbo back exhaust.

Negative.. the vf34 and vf39 are the same compressor and turbine wheel. The diffrence is they have slightly diffrent housings on the hot side. The vf34 is a pe18 and the 39 is a pe20.

There a nubmer of turbos that you can chose from fo the 2.0L WRX. Here a list of some from IHI and Mitsubishi

IHI Turbos

VF22
VF30
VF34
VF35
VF37 (twin scroll)
VF39 (USDM STi Turbo)

Mitsubishi Turbos

TD04-13T (Stock Turbo)
TD05-16g small wheel
TD05-16g Super Wheel
TD05-18g
TD05-20g

With any turbo upgrade you need some sort of Engine Managment as well as larger injectors and a fuel pump and a catless up-pipe. Thoes are the bare minimums you will need to keep from blowing up your engine.

There really is no "best" turbo. What you need to decide is what you want to do with your car. And then go from there to decide on what turbo you want. I'd recomend going to www.boostplanet.com and asking thenm a few questions.

Negative ghostrider, pattern is full. The VF34 is a P18 housing and the vf39 is either P17 (early 04 production) or P18 (later STi). P18 VF39s and VF34s are essentially identical in terms of power output and spool. You are correct in saying that any worthwhile turbo upgrade requires injectors, a fuel pump, and some form of engine management.

As for the rest, you need to define "best" as you see it Jizzo. How important is spool versus peak horsepower? Will you be drag racing, autocrossing, track driving...? That will help us suggest a "best" turbo for you. So far everybody else is just telling you which ones are bigger.

Hmmm...you guys got me thinking too!!

I've been a fan of the WRX since Collin took his WRC championship and now, I've finally got one of my own!! I'm a totally rookie on the world of forced induction and a newer turbo choice will be likely for me in the near future. I'm a big time track and autocross enthusiasts so a Turbo with relatively low boost characteristics and strong mid-high end and little give down below would be best right? Basically, I want a Turbo that I comes alive around 2-2.5k rpms with the full treatment of bolt ons, port polishing and engine management. I was looking at the VF34...would this be a wise choice?

Why don't you just get a deadbolt TD04?

There are a lot of bolt-on turbos that would be great for you. Look into the VF23- the 22b turbo. Great spool on a 2.0.

Yeah, ummm... You should be gainig 60-80 horsepower at the wheels. Do you mean the reflash came last and that only gave you 6-9 hp over not having it?

After re-reading I believe that he is saying after all was in stall he got a base number, then retuned and only got 6-9hp more ON TOP of the install.

So did you go from stock to a VF34, injectors, and fuel pump? What kind of steps did you take before that if any? Did you reflash it ever before?
