Turbo lag...reduction
I'm a noob and I was wondering a good way to get "rid" of the turbo lag. From talking to the head mechanic at my sub dealership, they say CAI (injen) and exhasut will bring the turbo lag from 3200 RPM down to 2200. From reading posts and replies on i-club, i'm getting mixed opinions on CAIs being pointless to the car's performance, which i understand why, but some people live by them. friends of mine say to get the intake and some are "mad" that i even put CAI and turbo in the same sentence/question. So what are some effecient ways to reduce the turbo lag?

what kind of uppipe? my subaru mechanic said that uppipes can possibly affect the warranty...is he talking out of his ****? Has anyone had a problem with uppipes and warranties?
Since i posted this thread, i talked to someone and they suggested gpmoto short ram intake. opinions anybody?

uppipes will void your warrenty. but it will reduce some lag. itll get rid of your pre cat, giving the exhaust a smoother flow. getting rid of the downpipe will give you the most gains, but again itll void the warrenty. some have stated that with the up/down pipe comb, it felt like a n/a car.
if you decide to do both, install both at the same time!

I agree with the uppipe. I put a VISHNU 321 stainless on mine (I think It's the best on the market) and noticed a world of difference. ALso an injen CAI, sounds cool helps turbo spool up but not 1000rpm alone. also a good mod is the 3/16th coupler on the breather for the turbo. It helps the turbo spool up 300rpm sooner and gives you full boost in all of the gears, not just 3,4,5.
I have a boost guage on my car before any mods and I checked the differnece.
I know down pipes are good espically ones with a divorced waste gate(check out VISHNU) but I haven't gotten one yet.
Last is a BOV. I found that It helped build boost quicker between shifts and it also sound cool.
hope this helps

You are thinking of turbo threshold right there. Lag has nothing to do with when the turbo spools up. Lag is the time it takes from when you hit the gas to the time you have full boost. Lag is kind of hard to get rid of. There are ways to do it, but from what I understand they are not all that safe because they keep your turbo spooled all the time or something, not sure exactly how they work. But to answer your question upipe will not decrease your lag it will decrease your threshold. But getting a lower threshold is good too.

turbo lag on forced induction cars will always be present. there are ways to reduce the lag, however, to actually "rid" of it would be impossible at this point. however, there are many companies that are trying to reduce it to a bare mininum, however i would say either get twin turbos or nitrous, but lag will always be present. also, i don't think there are many turbochargers that actually give you good low end torque at low rpm's and good top end all in the same package. it's either going to be one or the other. that's why, when selecting a turbo, you should probably revolve your choice/choices around if you're looking for a good daily driver or just a good track turbo. however, turbo lag isn't all that bad, especially on a rolling start. for the track, it may be a bit different. but it's all a matter of opinion and what you're looking for.

You could also go with a sequential turbo set up. With a small turbo for the low end and a bigger turbo for the high end. Granted sequential turbos are fairly tough to plumb as I understand it, but they would really give you the best of both worlds. Also with the smaller turbo you would really minimize the lag you are getting.

do yourself a HUGE favor, and dont listen to any mechanic that recommends a CAI for a wrx. Especially if they think its going to do a damned thing for lag.
What you need is an up pipe and a down pipe.
This will bring your spool down a good 800+rpm along with giving you another 20-25whp
But yes its gonna kill your warranty.
My car hasnt had a warranty since it was about a week old.

yeah, an up-pipe and down-pipe should cut down the lag. hey Davenow, i'm on the same boat as you, no warranty. isn't it good, we can mod without thinking about that warranty crap, however, if something goes wrong, it's to the bank machine we go.

NOS will also eliminate your engine if used without proper engine building and supporting mods on a WRX. Seen it first hand, by someone who thought it would be a good way to rid turbo lag on a stock EJ20. The person was warned and thought he knew better now he has a WRX that is collecting dust in a garage because he can"t afford the new engine. It was quite a dramatic engine failure too.
