The absolute primary cause of turbo failure on the WRX, according to my dealership, is a break in a coolant line. Remember, the turbo is BOTH liquid and oil cooled -- and it needs it! If either coolant line gets a crack or falls off, that turbo is toast. There's no other reason for one to fail, unless you've got a manual boost controller and you are hitting 18lbs in first gear.

High boost on VF22

The VF22 and other IHI turbos seem to have issues if run at high boost ( ie 18 psi) on a daily basis.

Some folks have also had "smoking" due to seal problems on them. Not sure if the seal problem is related to thrust bearing problems from high boost on not.

The mitsubishi and Garrett turbos have better thrust bearings / designs available. I'm not aware of a 360 degree thrust bearing upgrade being available for the IHI turbos.
