Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Ticking when cold during a specific RPM range.

Hello all,

I have a 2004 WRX 5mt with a few mods, a Dastek chip, Pod Intake, Blow off valve and cat back...oh and a Catless Up-pipe and a Perrin boost controller. Car has about 7300 miles on it and pullsstrong. Since the weather has gotten cold here in new england I have noticed 2 things.

1) I get a little bit of clutch shudder in the morning, but it goes away after I start and stop a few times..no big deal.

2)At about 2000 to oh let see 2500 rpm my car makes a ticking sound when it's cold and first starts up. It comes from the right side of the car(in the cabin), which is on the turbo side. So the left side if you were facing the car and opened the hood. The noise dies down after the car warms up, but you can still here it a little. This didn't happen until it was cold out. This is my second WRX and that one made ticking sounds in the cold too, but this one is a little different. Any thoughts? I look forward to the group's input.

PS Thanks everyone for the good posts on rev matching and double clutching...plus we even got some great footage of a pro race driver double clutching!

so is it like a metal to metal ticking sound? or more like a loose gasket ticking from a leak? just guessing, but there might be a leak with the uppipe install. I've spoke to people who could only hear the leak at the start when its cold...then as it warms up the metal expands and seals the leak. that might be the answer *shrugs*

I'm not sure what a gasket ticking would sound like, but your explanation seems plausible. Would it be a pain to get at the up-pipe again? Car seems to hold boost ok and performs fine...seems like cars always go crazy in the winter...
