Ticking Sound

I was wondering if anybody might be able to identify this sound. I have asked both mechanincs where I work (diesel truck mechanics) what the sound is and they have both said that is not piston slap or rod knock. I hear this sound in between shifts in gears 1 - 3 or if I ride at about 3K rpm's in gears 1 - 4 though it is very hard to hear in 4th gear. When the car idles the sound is not there only when I rev the engine to 3K or higher can you hear the sound. Can somebody please help me with this annoying noise??

Hear is a link to a video I took. The sound is not the greatest, but you can hear what I am talking about if you listen closely. The sound I am describing sounds like someone is sticking a card into the spokes of a bike tire.

To me it sounds like it is coming from around the intercooler area. I looked under the car today to see if anything was rattling around, but couldn't see anything. It almost sounds like it is coming from under the intercooler. I am a little scared as to what it could be and hope to God that it isn't rod knock, or anything like that cause I don't have the funds to be buying another engine or spending a butt load trying to repair this one.

From the sounds on your video it sounds like an exhaust leak to me. I have had this problem with every gasket in my ehaust. It is REALLY irritating. If you think its near your intercooler it my be the gasket between your turbo and downpipe. Have you done any exhaust work latley or ever??? You should always replace the gaskets whenever you take the exhaust apart.

Yeah, I put all new gaskets on when I had my TBE, VF34, and up-pipe put on. I have had this setup on for almost a year now though. So that is why I didn't think it is the exhaust, but you never know. However, with an exhaust leak, wouldn't you hear that sound all of the time and not just in a certain rpm range, I don't know cause I have never had one before?

I am in a same boat. I have a 02 WRX auto and was having the same ticking sound that you described. I had it for a while and did not know where it was coming from. I turned out to be a spun rod, and most likely will have to have a engine replaced. I don't what to do either. Bummer
