VF34 map = ~270 to the wheels and big grins.

Circa $1600-1700 if you don't mind putting used stuff on your new car.

ej20's are authentic 300hp motors everywhere except here, they detune them to run off american P!ss gas. Much like everyone said, if you want to be cheap, buy the bugeye and convert to JDM EJ20, you can get all the parts used and they are in abundence. JDM turboback's are around 500 bucks, used turbo can be had for 400 bucks, injectors and fuel pump 300-400 depending if they are used. Gut the stock up pipe or sometime people will give you a STI uppy for 50 bucks. Tune the engine using any of the 20 forms of computers available for the car. You have a stock sounding, basically JDM STI, except for the tranny. That is pretty much 300+ authentic stock hp, because you can make it using all subaru Ej20 parts. Higher octane gas doesn't hurt either, I don't know what kind of p!ss they give you guys up in canada, but 93 isn't bad to make 300 on those parts.

My 2 cents: the EJ25 pings from the factory, and EJ20 Subarus in other countries are sold stock with around 280hp. The 2.0 block can make good power and it's cheap, though the 2.5 on paper has more potential.

I suggest dropping a Crawford 2.4 built motor in an old wagon, that would get you in an auto magazine for sure.

stock 280 is claimed horse power, just like toyota and nissan claimed that the supra and skyline had 276hp. RIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHT. All auto makers claim this and that, most japanese and europeans underestimate. Hundai just got beat up on lawsuits because they claimed some of there engines to powerful, and so did the new Rx-8.

Spec-C engine dynod at 320+. So that whole 280 claim you can wipe your @$$ with it. skylines wheel dyno stock like they have well over 400hp from factory. So basically the claim is what RPm the engine makes 276hp and that's how they do it.

A turbo 2.0 liter engine running over a BAR of boost on 100+ octane, has to be making that power. If you've ever ridden in a car with a japanese engine swap the japanese engine pulls way harder and has way more horsepower. Like any honda swap a *** GSR swap, you can tell a whole lot of difference between it's claimed to be the same american counterpart.

The old BMW M5's claims 395 crank hp, everyone I ever saw dyno'd did over 400hp to the wheels stock.

I'm just saying basically the the whole 280 thing is a total claim, because all of the lighter cars ie wrx's, evo's, mr2's would in theory be faster then Skylines and that just isn't the case even though a skyline is a totally heavier car with the same claimed horse power.
