Sorry im a noob
Hate to do this to you guys but i have to find it somewhere and my search didnt answer my questions.
I would like to pick up a WRX in the near future but i like the EJ25 (STi) motor better.
Is the EJ20 as capable as the newer and more powerfull EJ25? What are the differences other than just displacment and intercooler?
And how hard is a swap to an EJ25 from an EJ20?
Thanks a bunch guys and gals.

Just wondering, but why would you buy a wrx and then put an ej25 in it when you could just buy the STi instead? You figure to spend about roughly $4-7k (I have no idea how much an engine would cost) for it and then figure the cost of install and all the necessary parts and that already brings you into STi pricing territory.
As for EJ25 capability, that has yet to be determined since it is still fairly new and not as much aftermarket support for it like the EJ20.

i would have to agree with turnwrx
unless of course you bought an older rs, and put an ej25 in it :P
that is so badass, it would haul for sure
it would make a lot more sense to just buy the STI rather than put STI engine in a wrx

i'm going out on a limb here. . . FDTT if i may-
i say if u really want the wrx with a sti eng swap. . .then do it. to make the wrx like an sti is a lot easier than trying to make the sti like the wrx. example- i think it would be nice to have the power of the sti with some of the comfort of the wrx(sound dampening)
it would be a pain in the rear to try to make the sti quiet in terms of ride. . . but then again how important is it to have a quiet riding car?
just thought i'd make a different argument. . .

The reason why i want the STi engine is because i like the low end punch that the 2.5 liter displacement will give me and there is more possibility for power from the engine.
Not to mention i like the look of the older (round headlight, sorry dont know the chassis code) WRX. And i would also like to be original. I have seen less WRX's driving around my city then STi's.
In the last 3 days i have seen 4 different STi's. Not really liking the front end on it either.
I like to have the best of what i can have in each of my cars. So i figure that the EJ25 would be the best engine to put in there. But as you have said there is little aftermarket and the engine has yet to be tested on that account.
I was alos wondering, Is it possible to mount the 6 spped out of an STi onto a EJ20 WRX? IS it a direct bolt on or do you have to modify the driveshaft lengths and such?
How difficult is the engine swap? Do i need different motor mounts? Are the mounts in different locations? Will it even fit? Has anyone done it before? Any links to a page that has an EJ25 swap in a WRX?

Ok, lots of questions here, I'll try to get to all of them. First off the quotes of 4-7K are way off for a EJ257 swap, I've seen the shortblocks as low as $1375 shipped. The swap is straightforward if you feel like doing it yourself, if you pay someone it should be less than $1000. The main problem you'll run into is the resulting compression. A thicker head gasket will help but then you'll have intake and exhaust manifold fitting problems. A lof of people are running the stock STi head gaskets and running EM (engine management) with no problems. Now the other problems. You'll need a new turbo because the WRX's TD04 won't flow nearly enough after 4500-5000rpms. After that you'll run into breathing problems. The stock WRX is just starting to hit it's stride at around 5000rpms but the cams and head flow makes it fall on it's face at around 6700rpms. A simple solution is port and polishing of the stock head and a set of USDM STi cams which can be had fairly cheap (i.e. cheaper than the Jun or horribly made cobb cams). The Tranny is another story however, THAT will set you back a bit to do right. Almost $9000.00 to do right (R180 rear diff and so on). The parts needed for a proper 6MT swap are many. 6MT, R180, driveshaft, halfshafts etc. I hope I answered most of the questions, if I forgot one or two let me know.
Cheers,
Joel
p.s. no need to bag on the guy for some questions, I personally like the bug eyes better myself. besides, leave the flaming for NASIOC lol.

I think you'd be better off with an sti.
Stock 02'- 03' wrx kbb is between 21,000 -23,000 that's a little high. Lets say you pick one up with high miles for $16,000.
Engine swap = 3,000 professionally installed (short block)
probably 6,000 for a full used motor.
Trans and drivetrian= 9,000 professionally installed
let's see. thats $16,000
+6,000
+9,000
--------------
$ 31,000
You could get an 04' sti for that. With a warranty.
Hell even throw in $2k for a body kit to improve the looks a little(since you don't like the 04') Even through in another 600 for a good catback(so it sounds a little better. Maybe even 300 for some Dynamat. Bamm! you've got a new car, with a warranty, that you can finace. It'll beat most cars on the road and youv'e only spent about 35k. Hell you vmight even find a slightly used sti on here for less that 30k. I think if you have unlimited cash then go for it. It would be really cool and you would have a rare beast. But it sounds like the sti would be a good choice for you. MY 2 Cents. Good luck

Thanks a bunch guys.
The reason i wand a WRX is because i can pick one up for $18000 CDN. And the new STi goes for +$45000 CDN.
That is more than double the price of a WRX.
I would do all the engine work myself and such. Deffinetly wouldent pay for someone else to do the work for me.
Is it possible to bor out the EJ20 block to 2.5 liters? Essentialy making it an EJ25?
Im not sure if i would go through witht the EJ25 swap or not. But im considering it. I like the 2.5 liters of displacement but the price will make me change my mind.
I know that there are alot of VERY fast EJ20's out there. SO i may just go for that.
Is it all that hard to hit 300hp out of an EJ20?
Ultimatly i would like 350-450 hp out of the car. Alot of the time the car will spend on the local track. And it will also be a daily driver. Is this a realistic goal for a WRX?
