I don't know how it compares to other shifters and bushings (STi, Cusco, etc.), but I just went with what others seemed to be happy with and I'm happy with it. The price is right, too.
Shifter installs easily, although I used a block of wood and a rubber mallet to seat the shifter ball in the socket. I also had to use a Dremel to grind about a 1/16" off the inside edge of one corner of a reinforcement plate on the floor (you'll see it when you remove the console). If I didn't do this, the shifter would contact the plate when in 1st gear. Bushings were very easy to install. Both shifter and bushings took less than a half hour total, although I have to add a few minutes for the time it took to grind a small area of that plate.
There is a noticeable high-pitched buzzing sound that emanates from the transmission/shifter after replacing the spongy rubber bushings with the hard Kartboy units, but it isn't objectionable to my ears.

I love me my Kartboy shifter and bushings! Great drivability mod!

Kartboy bushing and lever...
took about 40min to instal both (really easy)
short shift lower the thrwo 40%
bushings get rid of the squishy feeling so the lever "pops" from 1st to neutral then pops from neutral to 2nd.
it really improves the feeling you get from the shifter because if you're short (like me) you dont feel like your reaching in 5th. also the poping sensation makes it feel far more solid, like it's impossible to not shift all the way into gear because you nudge it towards and it snaps from entirely in neutral to entirely in first.
even if you dont get the short shift the bushings alone are worth it and a bargain at about $30
other thing to keep in mind... because of the nature of the way short shifts work. if you buy any short shift other than the factory short shift (because it replaces the linkage too) you'll have to modify the metal plate around the shifter becuase the distance from the ball joint to where the linkage connects is greater and the linkage will probably rub in first. I had to grind mine down... I know a lot of people have used a dremmel, some remome the plate all together and I've seen one where they rotated it 180degrees.
also for the same reason it will be harder to shift (more force required) this is just because you have less mechanical advantage (remember all those "lever" lectures in physics class) and it will happen no matter what short shifter you get
just some things to keep in mind. I personaly love my short shift and think it's the best $$ spent on my car thus far
