Seeking Enlightenment: AVO Wastegate
As the title says...
1) What are the pros and cons of this wastegate?
2) What is the difference in switching out the wastegate and getting a manual boost controller?
Thanks for the help in advance...
Chris

I am not sure about the AVO WG, but I have seen some others that have higher spring rates than the stock WG. Basically what it does is hold the WG shut longer so that the turbo builds boost quicker. Then at the last second it opens and lets off excess boost to be able to hold it steady. I think the stock spring is only a 7 or 9 pound spring, meaning that at 7 or 9 PSI it starts to open. Aftermarket ones that I have seen are more like 15 pound units.

I actually just talked with Mike from Rallitek.com. Good guy, he helped answer some of my questions, which pretty much went the way you just explained it.
My biggest interest is to keep the power band from falling on its face at 6k and hoping this would help in that.
Thanks,
Chris

You can get full boost, faster, in all gears. It may help in keeping power going to redline, but he kind of avoided the subject.
Another thing is that it looks like the stock wastegate and would probably be overlooked by certain (ha) people.

First off let me say I work with the guys at Rallitek a lot and I can honestly tell you Sean and Mike are two of the coolest and most honest fair guys in the subaru tuning industry. I've never had a single problem or concern that wasn't taken care of on the spot. More to the subject, I have the AVO wastegate actuator (thanks Rallitek). The other poster was right, it's only purpose of it is to hold bleeding of the wastegate longer. This enables full levels of boost (under ideal conditions, ie. you will probably never get "full" boost in 1st or 2nd on level ground, there just isn't enough load usually; there are exceptions, maybe you have a fat girlfriend and the turbo has to work harder I don't know) Anyhoo, I would say the AVO piece is one of the best first upgrades after full exhaust. My car is not too tricked out, just Invidia turbo-back, perrin up-pipe, AVO intake, sways, endlinks, gauges pretty basic, but I run 16.5-17 psi (sometimes a little more if it's super cold outside, damn NW) and I've never had a problem. And there should be no problem with any AVO part, EVER. They make some of the best and most tested quality parts out there. Hit me up if you have any questions.
p.s. Mike, Sean, if you're reading this, I need a new t-shirt lol

I would think that before boosting up you would want to add some type of fuel enrichment i.e. Apexi S-AFC, HKS AFR, etc...
Yes boosting up will net you good HP gains, but at what price to the engine? I'm not sure how your a/f ratios will change going from 8 psi to 15 psi, but more air + more fuel = more power....not just more air.

Well, I've been told by many people that the stock ecu and fuel system is fully capable of handling 17 psi after that you run into IDC overloads. I've been running 17 psi for quite a while with a knock sensor and have had no problems.
For what it's worth
