RPM drop while at WOT

Had my catless up and down pipes installed a week ago, so I am fully catless now. When I am at WOT(wide open throttle) in 4th and 5th gear my rpms sometimes will climb from 4k-6k REALLY fast, but I won't feel very much power, then they will drop back down to about 5k, all the time while I am at 100% TPS/WOT. Help?

Does it sound like a cow is dying and moaning in your car when you lose RPMs? No joke. How long have you had your car? WRX?

No wierd sounds that I notice, just sounds like I am letting go of the gas, then re-applying. Had it for over a year now, got it in september 2003. I have a utec also, but haven't made a map for my new upgrades, so it was doing this on stock mode.

Your clutch might be slipping.

I think this is a good possibility. Note that atreger mentioned he noticed the RPM increase very quickly in 4th and 5th gear, when load is higher than the lower gears at the clutch. He also noticed that he didn't feel much in the way of acceleration accompanying the rapid RPM increase. Then, as vehicle speed slowly increased and he'd passed the torque peak of the engine, the clutch began to grab once more and the RPM settled back down.

If you put the car in 5th geat at a low rpm and punch it you should be able to make it slip if it is the clutch. I would try punching it at 2k then 3k and so on.

Good luck

If I punch the gas in 4th or 5th it seems to hold fine, untill it is right at about 4k rpms when turbo is at full boost. I can do a launch just fine with no slipping of the clutch... it is wierd. It NEVER did this before I got my up and downpipes, any other ideas?

Put it in 4th or 5th gear, rev up to around 3-4k rpms, step on the brake and go WOT at the same time and see if your rpms shoot up at all. Sorry but I cant think of anything other than the clutch that would make your rpm's shoot up so fast then settle back down at WOT.

If you are thinking it has to be related to your new mods remember that your new mods will increase HP and torque. Maybe your clutch is worn to the point that it wont hold at certain points with the additional power that has been added.

I'm no expert and I could be wrong but this is all I can think of. If the clutch is not the problem hopefully someone else can chime in with another idea.

Good luck

If your clutch is slipping, that RPM would pretty much coincide with the point when your engine is making close to maximum torque. It is torque, not horsepower, that determines the holding capacity of a clutch setup.
