My gutted up-pipe has yet to throw a CEL. (but that doesn't mean it won't at some point)
The gutted up-pipe is totally stealth, no one can tell by looking.
As long as you have a cat somewhere downstream, you should be safe, as far as emissions tests go. But once again the visual inspection may be a factor.

ALRIGHT!!!!
Thanks man... cuz my concern primarily is being pulled over for a THUNDEROUS roar from missing the cat... but the way u put it, it seems like the only difference in sound will be the spooling of the turbo, which i love
thanks again!
thanks again!

CAUTION when gutting up-pipe
If you do decide to clear the catalyst material from your up-pipe, be absolutely sure there is no loose debris when reinstalling it.
I small piece of cataylst material (or several) can damage the turbo at speed.

Now, all you people seem to overlook a couple of points to consider when gutting an up-pipe cat.
1. (probably most important) Catalyst is a nasty substance, don't want to inhale it, don't want it on your hands, don't really want it anywhere near you when it breaks up, don't eat it, put it in your pee-hole, whatever.
2. A gutted cat is an area that will cause turbulence in the exhaust stream. Not sure how big around the pre-turbo cat is, but if it's any decent size, the exhaust will have an area to tumble around in and cause turbulence... in effect slowing the exaust.
Overall, I think you're better off just getting a cheap up-pipe like a GT Spec or one from Gruppe S for like 150 and saving your catted up-pipe if you need it.
