I had the same problem. I warm my car up and I started smelling gas in the cabin hella bad. I was thinking It was alway smelling like that when it cold so it didnt bug me. But that night the temp was 30 degrees. So I was pulling out of the drive way and I notice there was a pool of water where my car was at. It end up being gas. It was hella leaking. I took my car to Capital Subaru in San Jose and they fix it right away.

lots of good info guys, thanks for the feedback, but does anyone have relatd info to the "little black box" because im positive my smell is coming from that direction, even when my car is fully warmed up I guess I will have to take it into a shop, how much would an inspection run me? im broke from fixing a broken 3rd and replacing with an sti 6spd

Need more info on that! And damn dude, where you been?

Just read that CA is not one of the recall states. However, they should still fix it under the recall if the problem presents itself. Time to store the Suby at the dealership overnight! (not that I don't like supporting the Levy Bros., they kick ***!)

ok, so reviving this thread...

I filled up before a trip out to a fire academy and went to my buddy's house to pick him/his gear up and parked on his slanted-to-the-passengers-side driveway, got out and got a HEAVY gasoline smell. I look under the car, and gas is dripping from the bottom of my gas tank. so i tear everything out of my wagon, snug the cap on top of the tank, and the seal to the inside of the car down (it was already tight) and it stopped after i pulled onto a flat surface. I have changed my fuel pump. what is going on?!!?

Today I got an email from my mom at home saying that I received something from Subaru, and "it sounds like they are offering you [me] a free fix" for the fuel smell issue. I haven't had issues with the fuel smell but I wouldn't be opposed to having a preemptive fix since it sounds like an extremely common problem.

Has anyone else received one of these letters recently? Is there any reason I would want to NOT have this done? Would they create issues because of my modifications: catted TBE, silicone intake tract, suspension)? I bought my wrx after the warranty had expired so I have never had any experiences with the service department.

same here..i received the letter and i dont have any gas smell.. hope i dont get it soon.. i also have minor mods :spt intake,tbe exhaust, unortodox pulleys, greddy bov..and also after warranty so never had to do any service..what should we do??

What is involved with the dealership's version of the fix? What are they actually going to do if I bring it in?

The issue is with a fuel hose like 4" long underneath the intake manifold.

Fixing involves removing the intake manifold, which includes removal of:
- several coolant lines & intake manifold vacuum lines
- moving the power steering pump
- all engine harness connectors to sensors like crank sensor, oil pressure sensor, coolant sensor, coilpacks, etc...
- TGV housings

Then the unbolt the "old design" fuel hardlines and bolt in new lines that where that one hose is are a slightly different shape so the short rubber fuel line doesn't twist as much as it did with the old design, which helps it to not leak as much in cold weather as it did.

If someone showed you the new and old hardlines next to each other, you'd have a hard time telling the difference unless they pointed it out to you.
