Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Quick-spooling aftermarket turbo

What aftermarket turbo for the 2.0 powerplant spools up the fastest? I'm interested in more top-end power vs. the stock turbo, but I'd like to minimize the spool penalty as much as possible.

For top end and quick spool up, I'd recommend the VF30/34 turbos. There are a couple of VF series turbos that will spool faster, but they won't hold the top end the way the 30/34 will.

I would go with some sort of 16G either forced performance or deadbolt. I have a VF30 on my car and wish that one of the 16gs was available when I purchsed it.

I had a 16g turbo on my old DSM and it was a great turbo!

Super

If you have money to spend, I'd say get an APS SR40 and an APS FMIC. I've driven a 03 WRX with this combo and it KNOCKED ME OUT -- 315 WHP on 91 pump gas and torque from 2400 RPMs on. The combo will set you back $3600, however... Endless pull all the way to 6600 RPM, absolutely no lag.

Consider Blouch turbo's. They are Mitsu. and they port the hot side as std.
There 16G is the same as FP, and more than likely Deadbolt, and they do have a 1 yr. warranty. These can be up-graded to an 18G later on, if you want.

You will see good results with the VF34.
The turbo lag isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
