Say you are running a nice bellmouth downpipe that mates to a stock exhaust? Why you ask? For daily driving/noise.
You can install a cutout at the bottom of the downpipe for a catless way to run your car, and be loud when you want to be.

There are also some that when opened bypass the exhaust completely. They are normally installed around the bottom of the downpipe and allow one to run an amost open exhaust bypassing all cats and mufflers.

my father had something similar on an old chevy pickup. he had a quiet exhaust then one with straight pipes from the headers and glass packs. loud just hit a button in the cab and presto

It really depends there are a couple of companies out there....QTP Performance is one of the few and there's even a Electronic cutout Muffler made by Xforce called the Varex, the cutout is actually build into the muffler. But I have yet to see anyone around here have it. Supposedly its pretty good and is remote controlled like the rest.
