Look and see if you have a drop of oil on the bottom of your oil filter. This is indicative of the crank seal/oil pump seal leak that is very common on the WRX. Oil leaks from either the crankshaft seal or the o-ring behind the oil pump and drips down through the timing belt covers and onto the the oil filter. It also hits the exhaust manifold cross piece in the process and this is the source of your burning oil smell.
I took my WRX in with major mods and got no grief. As I said, this is a fairly common problem and is not in any way caused by additional power. The problem happens to stock WRX's as well.

I noticed this a few days ago in my wifes wagon, coming from the turbo-blown seal I'm sure. It's still making boost. Engine vacume is as high as ever. Good thing we have the extra. She has 35000 miles.

mine has been leeking oil from there for awhile. i brought it to the dealer once and they said there was no problems. i also have the Greddy adapter ring installed before the oil filter, but there def. is oil coming out of the temp belt compartment. is this bad for the car?

I have the same problem. I have samco hoses, vishnu up, invidia down, and greddy back. I noticed the oil smell about 3 months after I did the complete install. I looked under my car about a month ago and noticed some oil streaks on my oil filter. I wiped it off and checked again the other day and theres some residue but im not sure if its from the past cause I didnt wipe it off very well. Im due for the 30k service right now....hopefully theyll fix this under warranty.
