new 2004 wrx, trouble starting...
hi all,
have a new 2004 wrx sedan, completely stock just 3 weeks old...in the last 3 weeks i've had 3 or 4 instances where I crank the engine but the car wont start. I'll crank it for 5-10 seconds and nothing, second time i try it usually starts up (albeit reluctantly sometimes). I saw a previous thread about giving it a couple seconds for the fuel pump to run, which I alway do, i thought that might have been the problem, but i've had the problem twice today even after leaving it "on" for the ECU to do its thing before cranking it....weather hasn't been super cold (maybe 40degrees?), I don't drive it hard (just finished break in), any ideas?
new car problems suck
thanks all, this forum has been a big help all in all...

Might be best to drop it off at the dealer. They'll have to try to duplicate the cold-start by keeping it overnight. There are a couple of threads in the WRX Powerplant EJ20T forum but nothing conclusive. This isn't normal. My rex starts right up in 40 degree weather, whether I wait for the pump to prime the system or not.

takin it in...
Thanks for the replies, i will definitely take it in to have it looked at. It does seem like an odd problem for a brand new car. Problem doesn't seem to be uncommon either, hopefully the dealer will find something, i'll be sure to post an update if they do. Thanks!

I also have a 3 week old 04 which has about 1350 miles on the clock now. When it has been really cold mine takes slightly longer to start but all the other cars I have ever driven have been the same way. Never have had to crank anywhere near 10 to 15 sec.

I have an 02 WRX and mine did that when it was new also. Now 40K but for the first 3-5K of miles , about 2-3 weeks
I got mine when it was really cold out 10-30F Now it starts right up and does not matter if i wait for the pump or not. But if I consistantly do not wait for the pump I occasionally get a CEL ...
As for the battery comment... My battery did die after about 1-2 months. I bought a 650CCA battery replacement. I did not take it to the dealer. I have not had any starting problems since the battery was replaced, knock on wood

That weird. mine takes about 2 seconds to turn over. Stop turning the key before 2 seconds and it won't start. Then when i finally turns over on the second try you can hear the car struggling to burn off the extra fuel.
Maybe it is a bad battery or alternator. try hooking up a different 12v battery to it and trying it out. If it is the battery then get a optima marine battery. Sorry about the new car

That doesn't sound right, Eric. My car will start almost instantly and I never wait for the pump to pressurize the system. Summer, winter, with engine hot or cold, even high-altitude like Reno and it fires right NOW. I still have the OEM battery, too, but will get an Optima come replacement time.
The one thing I do check whenever I've disconnected either battery terminal is to make sure they are clean and dry, as well as the battery posts. I know that corrosion will lead to hard starting and I saw a guy's battery explode like a bomb when his terminals were badly corroded (an old Dodge Polara).

thanks guys, i read those threads before i posted, definitely not a fuel pump issue, as the last time this happened i distinctly remember waiting a good 10 seconds before trying to crank the engine. also not a cold engine issue cuz after i did get it started, i drove somewhere, parked for an hour, came back (engine still warm), and the same problem happened again! of course the next morning (and since then) it started like a champ, go figure! taking it in next week, stay tuned....
