Need some VF-22 advice
I just spent the day installing a VF-22, up-pipe and turbo-back exhaust. All went well, but. . .for the first half hour of driving the VF-22 gave off a high pitched whine (much what I would expect). However, after just another half hour the high pitched whine had turned to a low, but very noticeable whirr. It could even be heard winding down for a brief few seconds after the engine was cut off. The VF-22 is used, but it had no shaft play and no oil leaks, and I was assured it had low milage (under 10k). I am also running low boost, less than 15lbs.
Does anyone have experience with the VF-22, and does this sound abnormal?
It does to me, but this is also my first experience with an IHI roller-bearing turbo.
All my experience is from the Mitsubishi side (TD04, TD05, 14B, 16G, and 18G)
I've heard some contradicting reports on the VF-22s since my purchase, some have said they are prone to failure and break apart with disasterous results. However, a technician at Majestic Turbo says he considers them "damn near bomb proof" and believes any bad reputation is undeserved.
Any input from someone who has been here would be appreciated.

Did you prelube the turbo?
In any case that doesn't sound good. I'd pull it and have it rebuilt-new seals new wheels. You can upgrade the wheels to Garrett units. You can even take the opportunity to have the wastegaste ported for better boost control.
This will cost around $700 and up

Yes, I prelubed the turbo, and did a club of "dry cranks" on the motor to move some oil through it and let it idle for several minutes to look for leaks and problems before I drove it.
I don't want to get off-topic but I'm not certain the rebuild is worth it. A brand new unit goes for about $750. I've spent a lot of time around hybrid and custom turbos, Garret and otherwise, and while there are improvements in some areas (spool-up, mid-range boost, off throttle / on throttle response, ect) by and large, the slight performance gains are not worth the extra cost.

I use to have a VF22, and the same thing happend to me. For the first 30K miles it was fine, boosting @1.5 bar. Then the whine was getting louder. From the outside inspection, there were no oil leaks. Also notice alot of oil comsumption, and oil level was low. My friends advise my car starts to smoke alot when I punch on the freeway. With all that said, I ripped out the turbo and inspect it. Still nothing. Took apart the turbo completely, and notice the roller bearing was all marked, scorn, scarred,....just simply beat up! So if you have all those symtoms above, chances are you might have what I had.

running the PE1818 now...VF22 sitting on the garage floor. Since the VF22 has the p20 housing, I could convert it to the TDo5, Big 16G. I asked TS for help, but still no reply from them. I also bought the VF22 from them to begin with.
DeliciouSpeed, I once sent a 2.2 ohm resistor for free to someone with your similar name. Was that you?

PE1818 is ball bearing, spool 1.5 bar @ 3900 rpm (needs more tuning) 600 something CFM
VF22 is roller bearing, spool 1.5 bar @ around 3500-3700 rpm. 500 Something CFM
Not too fond of the PE1818 because of the lag. Awfull for canyon carving!
But the ball bearing feature of this turbo is where it really shine.
From 10% Partial throttle @ 3900-4200 to full throttle, the spool comes in quick.
Also at 20% throttle, you have to be careful. You can hit 1 bar plus at 20% partial!
PE1818 is about 1400
VF22 is about 750 or cheaper
TD05 16g is 800 something (looks like a good deal)
I'm looking into the TD05 Big16,18, or 20. Looks promising.
What I'm really looking for is full boost at 3000 rpms or better.
At least capable of 400WHP, nothing that cost like a HKS GT series!

VF22 question for both of you
Since both of you have had experince with the VF22 and I just happen to have bought one I have a question.
Both of you stated that you were running aroung 15psi of boost. I am to believe that you are running boost controllers of some sort to get this boost level, correct?
My VF22 is only putting .7bar, mind you I have no form of boost controller on the car and the ecu is stock as well.
I plan on running the sti injectors, 255lph fuel pump and an ECUTEK ecu. Hopefully by then I can safely turn the boost up to 15psi or so.
Thanks for any information you have,
Jose
