n00b warning...
My first post here...picking up my WRX next week and looking forward to buying some goodies for it. I'm sure you guys here this a million times a week, but where can I look for best bang for the buck stuff? Don't really know much about WRX aftermarket stuff yet...any suggestions?

You mentioned bang for the buck. That means inexpensive performance in my book.
After you break the engine in I would start with a manual boost controller. I ran about 15.5 - 16.0 psi in my WRX when it was stock. That was my first mod. It will give your WRX a nice jump in performance. Many guys including myself ran high 13s with just manual boost controllers. Turboxs sells a good one for $129
Next I would get some exhaust mods. They consist of a downpipe, mid pipe, and rear section. You can then replace the uppipe. These mods used with a manual boost controller can put a WRX in the low 13s.
With these mods I ran 13.3 @ 100mph in the 1/4 mile.
Then later on you can get some engine management and a bigger turbo/injectors, fuel pump. That will put you in the 12s.

More specific questions...
I'd like to get as much as possible out of it without losing any reliability/driveability. I'm familiar with aftermarket stuff....put ~$10k in the engine of my last two cars. Still have a greddy profecB boost controller, so that'll be going in. I have about $1k to start with right now, I was considering downpipe/exhaust but just didn't really know what companies to start looking at. Thanks for all your help guys!

GPMoto has turbo back exhaust including catalitic converter for about $1k. Non cat for well under $1k. Comes polished stainless or titanium(weighs < 10lb for midpipe/muffler)

The stock tires could definatly be upgraded to something alittle stickier and more sporting IMO.. The best bang for the buck to get horsepower/torque is in my opinion, an full exhuast, including an upipe. And Some form of engine management.
The type of engine management you need depends on what kind of person you are; If you want something you can just install and forget about it than you would really like the ECUTEK or UNICHIP, but if you think you want to change your own maps or learn to tune your own car(not as easy as it sounds with no experience) then you should research the Turbo-xs UTEC and the XEDE by Vishnu..
I've seen cars with just exhuast mods and ECUTEK get dyno #s as high as 220WHP, when your stock wrx dynos somewhere between 160-170WHP just so you know.
I strongly urge you not to buy an MBC as your first mod! You really need more mods to use an MBC safely, like an turboback exhuast+upipe, Samco IC hoses, + Boost, EGT gauges. Then it should be pretty safe to use one I think, but definatly not your first mod as some have suggested.

1) Regarding the MBC: I saw only one pic so far of one installed, and it fit right into the dash next to the so-called "cup holder." Looks is not my priority, but it would be cool to make it look factoryish... Is that standard, or strictly custom?
2) Just curious who did your exhaust work - you, an exhaust shop, a speed shop, ??? I've heard stories that replacing the up pipe for example, is a real pain in the butt.
Thanks!

First off, the pic that you saw was of an electronic boost controller, not manual. The uppipe can be a pain, but that is determined by the amount of knowledge you have working on cars. If you have the correct tools and can follow directions reasonably well, then you can do it.
