What about a port and polish of the existing turbo? Deadbolt offers this service for about $550 less than it would cost me to get a new turbocharger...

The stock turbo is just physically too small to do anything up high for you! If you want power upstairs, that stocker has to go! You can port and polish all you want... It will spool up sooner, but you'll still be top-end challenged....

You need a bigger turbo! VF30's can be found for around 650 new if you look hard enough... Those are a good all-rounder turbo for the wrx. If you want more top end, then the VF22, 18G, PE1818/1820 are options too....

If money is a concern, you can always sell your stocker after to recoop some of your $$'s....
