Intercooler Spray Mod

first off, im not sure where this thread should go, so i put it here,
moderators, feel free to move it where ever you want besides the trash.

from a buddy of mine I have heard of an Intercool spray mod.
as of now I do not have the $$$ for a real one so here goes

im not sure exactly how it works, so any suggestions would be awesome

THE MOD

what if i were to get the spray nozzles (no not the ones with lights on them that ricers put on) but spray nozzles and mounted them on the intercool. On the outside of it. THen i would go get some hosing similiar to the hosing that goes into the windshield wiper fluid container. some how connect the hosin to a part where when i push the button in my car it will squirt out water onto my I/C.

so I ask you

where would i connect the new hoses to get the desired result? and what kind of hosing am I going to be lookign to buy.

i've searched scooby mods but not thorouthly, any help would be awesome
it seems easy enough but who knows what im getting myself into.
and if you know of any place that has directions for this mod with pics that'd be awesome.

max

This is really easy to do, and not expensive at all. What you can do is get the STi nozzles for the IC spray (they are cheap, like $35 or so) and mount them. Then acquire the STi washer fluid reservoir- it has two pumps on it. Guess where the second one goes? Then, if you want to go super STi, get the STi in-cabin switch and wire it up, or just get whatever switch you wanna use. It's simple to make for manual use. If you want automatic spray, that's a bit trickier. I know it's been done with the Vishnu Xede by Mike Egan and Dan Zanelli, other than that you would have to get creative. Other substantial engine management systems probably have that capability as well.

DIY Intercooler Sprayer Kit for under $40 and IC Spray question.

Sport Compact Car magazine also published this article on a nice racing-quality do-it-yourself water sprayer.

The thing to remember is that you want a fine mist from the nozzles, not a course spray or a stream of water. It's a fine mist that vaporizes quickly and causes a big temperature drop due to the latent heat of vaporization. Look at the systems that rally cars use.

You could use a pressure switch that reacts to boost to trigger the IC spray pumps.

I.C. Spray Mod Complete

I have a wagon so i used the rear pump to spray the I.C. What I did to solve the "where to put the extra resevoir tank" is cut my stock tank in half, silicone a piece of plastic dividing the front windshield washer pump from the now I.C. spray pump. Drilled a hole on I.C. pump side and siliconed a filler cap on the top. Here is the Tank Installed.

I.C. Spray Brass Nozzles

I found some nice spray/mist nozzles from McMaster Carr. I decided on a "Flat Fan Spray" nozzle with a 120 degree spray angle. I used 2 nozzles 10 bucks for the pair. I used 3/16th clear tubing connected to the pump then that is connected to a wye. I thought water pressure would remaine more consistant and equal to each nozzle and stronger using a wye instead of a "T" The spray pattern is very good not as fine a mist as i'd hoped for but it gets the job done. Here are the nozzles .

If your looking for a kit Quantum Racing sells it complete with high pressure pump. Look around i dont think there are to many kits available. DIY is quite easy, just decide before hand exactly what you need to do and go for it..very rewarding...good luck
