Question Intake silencer delete question...

I was about to do the intake silencer delete on my 98 STi, when I noticed this was different....

Looks like it may be some sort of a temp sensor. At least they got the design right on the 2000+ models where the intake mouth is exposed to outside air, and not with the mouth positioned RIGHT BEHIND THE RADIATOR! All I need to know is if anybody has had experience with this, and if you have done the silencer delete, how did you position this sensor afterwards? I imagine this thing has to be pretty important, since it is spidered into the same harness as the MAF sensor. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't wait to see how the car performs after it knows what its like to breathe fresh cool air.
