How to? 300HP + QUIET exhaust sound
Calling all WRX experts...
300+ crank HP with exhaust NO louder than stock on a 2004 WRX...
Possible? If yes, HOW?
Absolutely, positively, quiet ride at all times...during idle, WOT, cruising, etc.
Thanks in advance.

No matter how much tuning you do, try to top it off with an exhaust known to be quiet such as the Greddy Evo or Blitz Nur-Spec Touring (NOT the Nur-Spec R or Nur-Spec V, they're two of the loudest). Either that, or stuff cotton in your muffler

And escaflowne, the Nur-Spec Touring makes comparable gains with the standard Nur-Spec, if I remember correctly. It's just that it's a bit heavier.

Blitz, Borla, Greddy
I currently drive a supercharged Nissan Maxima and it is catless (straight pipe) with Greddy EVO exhaust.
Maybe the Greddy is different on a WRX, however, on a Maxima, it is pretty loud. Even at crusing, you can hear the constant humming. After 2 years of that, I am truly sick of the noise.
What about TurboXS exhaust products? If I can get a quiet, stock-like ride, I'd just slap on their Stage III and done!
Appreciate your feedback.

Simply adding significant power to an engine will make for a louder sounding exhaust at WOT with no changes to the exhaust system. I found this out firsthand when I went from a 427 cu. in engine in my Camaro to a 481 cu. in. engine using the same exhaust. Similar results when I put an upgraded ECU into my turbo GLHS Omni. Both louder at WOT.
Most of the aftermarket exhausts use a straight-through muffler design, which is best for power, not for noise attenuation. The aftermarket has not really embraced baffled high-flow designs like Flowmaster (which, incidentally does or did offer an axleback exhaust for the WRX).
It must be possible to make 300 crank horsepower and still retain a quiet exhaust - the STi does it. I think use of a high-flow resonator in addition to the usual muffler is mandatory in any system where quiet performance is desired. Both the Borla Hush and the Vishnu exhausts utilize a resonator, as do a few others. Just make sure that the resonator inside diameter is the same as the exhaust pipe i.d.

easily done... buy an sti
otherwise, id personally reccommend a stealthback exhaust (i like turboxs) uppipe, i/c hoses, panel filter, pulley, and and some form of engine management. cobb = conservative and cheap, utec = DIY. i think with that setup youd be quiet enough (not quite stock sounding tho ), and right in the neighboorhood of a safe ~300hp at the crank

I have an '02 MBP WRX that's pushing 300hp to the crank and about 250hp to the wheels. I have the 3" APS turbo back exhaust and I absolutely love the sound. Low rumble at idle and a near stock sound crusing and sightly louder at WOT. You'll hear hear more engine than exhaust note at all times.
It looks great and the quality is top notch. I know that you are into JDM but you may want to consider adding a little Aussie flavor to the mix.
Here's a link if you want to check out the exhaust...

APS SR30 Turbo
APS Dual Entry TMIC
APS BOV
APS Intake
APS 3" Turbo Back Exhaust
