High pitched sound at 130mph
Well the other day im on the toll road racing a BluWRX wagon (i have a sedan). At about 125-130 mph i hear an extremely high pitched sound, almost like a high frequency vibration coming from what seems like the front right axle, fender, or under the passenger footwell. So I back off a bit and then hit the throttle again, and the same thing happened at the same speeds. WTF is up with my baby? The same thing happened to me on two other occasions, at 90 mph in very high santa ana winds (40 mph or more). Is it an aerodynamic problem? Axle problem? ALL INPUT CHERISHED!!!!!

Sounds
I was out on the 241 Toll Road {near Irvine} recently, and decided to give my REX some gas. At about 120 MPH, an unGodly whine seemed to come from the passenger side of the car. Really shocked me, even though I'd read that the rear views' really start to "howl" at high speeds. I was prepared for a little noise, but completely unprepared for such an intense vibration/sound. Old threads substantiate that the "sounds" are from the rear view mirrors at high speeds. Hopes this helps, Collins

wind noise at high speeds
I have had that same thing happen to me twice already. More than likely what is happening is that the windshield molding is vibrating at the high speed and whistling. Sort of like you putting a blade of grass in between your thumbs and blowing, it whistles. About the only thing you could do is have a windshield place add some sealer to the molding between the body and the molding itself.

Seriously though, this sound really scares me. Its really startling. But would it still be ok to go to 140 or so? Will the sound become deafening and then something will snap like my axle or my steering knuckle, and then i DIE@!!!!!!!???AHHHHHHHHH!!!! Well at least im not alone. I was just wondering if EVERY WRX has the same problem.

I think most WRXs make the noise. Most of past thread have concluded that it is the mirrors as Dick Fitzwell suggested.
Is it ok to go 140 or so??????? Hmmm, let me think about that. You know, I just cannot imagine why it wouldn't be??!? Seriously, as I understand it, molecular cohesion starts getting weak about that speed & everything just sort of beams away & never reassembles.

yo,
the high pitch noise or howl you guys are talking about are the side view mirrors. usually at about 125 mph.
if you've never heard it before you may think that your engine's about to blow up. the wrx is not the most aero dynamic car.

Hey guys....
For starters, im not sure if i get teh same sound but im pretty sure when i do its just wind passing by, nothing to be worried about. And for one thing, do you just want to ruin your WRX, going 140 does huge , i mean HUGE , stress on the car and ruins your compression. Dont be an idiot, dont go over 100 too often now...
deuce...

not to start a flame war, but how does going over 100mph (lets just say 140 to keep it easy) affect your compression?
Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that 10 mins of sustained 140mph speeds wouldn't be bad for your car, i'm just curious how it ruins your compression. Like after i find some nice open road and do a sprint to 140, (safely, to avoid that arguement) how does it affect my compression? Maybe i'm just not enough of an engine guy.......

Dont worry, im too careful to go 130 for more than a minute or so, with all the cops on the toll road. It was on the way to big bear. The real fun part of that trip was the road up the mountain.
I never realized that it could cause piston damage though. I better get me a reinforced strolker with a billet crank and forged pistons and rods. Cant forget the larger radiator and oil and tranny cooler.

Hey Blue wrx03 i had the same prob. I was cruising about between 130 and 135 when i heard the high pitch squeeling from the front driver side wheel. It happened in the middle of winter up here in Maine when the winds were howling....at first i thought it might be a piece of my broken front bumper, when a tree got in my way (another story), rubbing against my tire, but soon after inspection i doubted it. Then i was thinking that maybe it is because our stock tires are not rated to go that fast, and maybe somehow the tire was making the noise. After reading all the replies i agree that it was the wind and the forces that the wind put on the car at these speeds but i dont think a mirror would cause such a wretched sound. I think it has something to do with the front axle drivetrain, although pacobeagle may be right because i have had my windshield replaced (funking ice storms) and have not heard the sound in a while. Well peeps, you are welcome to shoot me down if you think im wrong but im just posting my opinion (thats why forums are great! everyone with a wrx should post, so we can have loads of info) and hopefully we can find a resolution to this problem.

Oh yea Blue wrx03 how fast have you gotton your wrx up to? Is there a Governer? Mods?
