Unhappy Help! weird noise coming from the turbo area

MOnday i noticed a noise that sounds like paper hitting a fan? I'm afraid it might be my turbo. When I hit about 3K to 4.5K RPM I hear the sound from the turbo/ passenger area. I just recently installed an STI up pipe and a Stromung DP. Am I screwed?

Did this start happening before you installed your uppipe(catless, I presume). How many miles you got on your car? Also, did you fix your cel after installing these parts?

It sounds like it might be a gasket leak somewhere. Maybe in the uppipe?

yeah, i think it was after the up/dp install. I did the resistor mod but i havent done the MIL fix for the catless dp. I bought used brand new gaskets for the install. I have about 40K , I've been running for over 1K with no CEL and recently heard the noise...about 75-50 miles ago. Could it be the waste gate fludder I've been reading about in NASIOC? I'll check the pipes this weekend if it doesnt rain. Thanks for the suggestions!

It could be, sonicsuby...I had a leak in my vishnu uppipe for alittle while, too, but if I'm reading his post correctly, it almost sounded like he blew his cat in the uppipe, which unfortunately happened to me, also. I thought I had blown a turbo, too, when it started sounding like I had paper or metal hitting my turbine blades and a huge loss of power at higher rpm's (at this time I still had my stock uppipe in)..I then took it to the mechanic and he, too, said it was my turbo, so out went my old stock turbo(and $1,000) and in went a td04 straight from the factory. Much to my dismay, that wasn't it... So after alittle more tinkering around and talking to other suby owners, and with Shiv's friendly assistance down at vishnu, we came to the conclusion (or so I hoped) that my cat in the uppipe had probably broken off. So after another few hours and $525, my new vishnu uppipe was installed, and after taking it for a testdrive, I hadn't really realized what I had been missing out on, for one dip into the accelerator and I thought I would have to be treated for whiplash..lol. Anyways, that's my story, and hopefully nobody else will haveto go through what I did. Hope that gave you some insight, t3ch9. I'll stop my babbling now...

thanks for your post, its much appreciated. Sorry you had to go thru all that to find it was just the cat in the up pipe. The up pipe i installed is catless and I'm not experiencing any power loss at all, just that dam sound that worries me.

Still having problem. Also found that I'm running rich (I'm smelling a little fuel vapors from the engine bay), any one have a 1.2uF tantalum capacitor for sale? The sound appears at almost all RPM ranges, especially at WOT. Help!

my car does the same thing, is your car an 04-05? Mine is, from what I've read a bunch of 04-05's do it. I don't have an exhaust leak and everything runs fine. Might just be the parts are designed for a 02-03, and the 04-05's are off slightly and it causes this weird noise my car runs fine, and your car is going to smell like gas if you run catless, so I would worry about it.
