Glowing turbo and misfire
Long story short I have the ability to possibly buy a 2002 WRX for dirt cheap. The problem is the check engine light comes on after being driven hard and it is on because of misfire in the back right cylinder. Also, after driving it moderatley hard with the CEL on the turbo was glowing red, alot. I don't know much about the history of the car, except it was probably modified somewhat as their are wires everywhere for stereo stuff, and some of the bolts in the engine bay look a little used.
The subaru techs, and even subaru of america have looked at it. They have replaced the heads, ignition system, fuel injectors, and more. But it has not solved the problem.
I am thinking that an oil seal could be broken causing the turbo to get way to hot, which is causing the intake air temp to rise, which is causing misfire.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong or what to look for? Thanks

Car Info: 2016 Acura RDX ... meh. Um, nice subwoofer?
WRX turbos often glow. Its kinda neat But that's not your problem. I've read about similar circumstances on NASIOC, regarding the repeating misfire. They even had the block replaced and the problem returned!
If you are in California it seems you are already covered by the Lemon Law(s). Its a 3 strikes and yer out for the dealership. Same problem occurs 3 times, they have you give you your money back.

I just experienced the glowing turbo last night. I did a slightly spirited run through a 2 mile canyon, where i was never on WOT. I popped the hood while it was cooling down and saw a big ball of molten iron. My second car is an SR20DET powered 240sx where I have NEVER seen the turbo glow like that. Granted I have seen it get red, but this turbo was almost see-thru it was soo hot. Is that safe?

Hmm 2 mile run? I've seen it get quite bright after a long freeway drive. Make sure you have good oil! I'd like Mobil 1 5w30, a nice light synthetic. And hey, you do have an intercooler
