It will lean out the cylinder, then it will have incomplete combustion which is bad unless you have some kind of A/F correction device like HKS AFR, S-AFC to adjust the A/F mixture. If you just want something that you can bolt on and have some kind of gains, then STI is a way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leaning out your cylinders does make more power but trust me .. Its not power you want. Save your $50 for now and wait until you have engine management or a reflash.

FYI - I just took my 2003 wagon to get it's 30K service and the dealer said my MAF sensor was dirty and gummed up with oil from the K&N filter.
I was getting an intermittent CEL and I guess that's what was setting it off. I didn't know about the history of the k&n and the problems it caused on the wrx MAF sensor so I did a search on i-club and guess what? I'm not the only one who had a problem!
Do yourself a favor and do a quick search... the dealer replaced the k&n with a new paper filter and I just ordered an STI filter. More flow without the oil.
I've used k&n's on all my previous cars/trucks with no problems. But it's just not the best option for our subies.
cheers
