External Wastegate Questions
Hey guys,
Sorry if this topic has been beat to death, however I did search and only came up with one thread that wasn't very helpful. I want to know what the benefits are to running an external wastegate vs internal and if it is worth running one on my car with its current setup. Thanks for all your help and here is my mod list:
Vishnu Uppipe
Vishnu Downpipe
Vishnu Cat(less)back
Vishnu Main Power Pulley
Vishnu Xede
HKS BOV
Gruppe-S Exhaust Manifold
VF34 Turbo
STi Injectors
Walbro Fuel Pump
Big TMIC (Either APS or Spearco)

There is no point running external gate on a turbo that has an internal gate, since your exhaust housing will still be the same.
Typically, with external gate you have more control over boost on LARGE turbo's without having to monkey around with the downpipe. No complicated downpipe "mouthes". Just a pipe. However, typically, the exhaust waste is dumped in the atmosphere, which makers the cars loud. You can route it back in the downpipe, but then the downpipes become too complicated and expensive.

Chris, I would reccomend against one based on noise alone. I had one on both my Grand National and T-Type and it got old FAST. The stock turbo used an external wastegate that dumped back into the DP (looked much like a devorced DP on our cars with a Waste Gate attached to the small tube) and that set up wasn't loud at all. So, if you insist on going that route, I would reccomend looking in to how to get it done that way I always regretted putting the atmospheric devorced waste gate on.

As everyone has stated they are pretty loud (I've had one on my WRX for over 2 years) unless you pipe them back into the downpipe (which is not that hard once designed properly) which cuts the noise down somewhat but also seems to effect the ability to induce faster spool up a little on bigger turbo's.
We have installed a couple of external gated setups on vf34's mainly due to us having a couple of units that just did not like to be controlled (Ala Creep..) both of these setups seemed to be able to out spool similar setups due to us being able to control them much more aggressively (gain on internal gated vf34 with SBC-id would be max 11 before spiking, with external gate 20-25 is possible).
Personally I would not bother with a external setup on the vf34 unless you fall into the following,
1) have boost creep and don't have faith that porting the wastegate tract will work.
2) Just plain like the sound and shizzle that comes with the external gated setup.
If you decide you do want to go external let me know I have a couple of custom fabbed brackets to force the stock gate shut that I had made up.
