EJ20T Limits?
I see a lot of companies make a lot of claims about power output from their kits/parts, but are there any generally accepted boundaries of just how far you should take it on stock internals? What becomes a problem first, the open deck-ness or the actual internals themselves? And is the power limit reached somewhere in the drivetrain (i.e. tranny) long before you're in danger of screwing your motor? I'd like to have a good idea of how far I can take my car before I start doing horrendously expensive things like swapping trannies or building motors...

i believe the 5mt is the weakest link in our cars. they can hold about 240ish whp before they start breaking. but they dont really seem to be consistant. some people have toasted their tranny in stock form. then again be really careful with the engine as well. i had a ring go bad in cyl#4 and i wasnt pusing much power. i know people that have much more horsepower and run their car leaner and have no problems at all.

i dont know if this will help but im pushing 290hp and 280tq to the wheels and im having no problems with completly stock internals and trans. I am upgrading the trans over the winter to a
sti 6spd. A bunch of pulls on the dyno and hard runs on the highway and no problems.

Well crap, looks like I'll have to do a 6mt at some point then, I guess every car has it's pain in the *** characteristic. At least this one is reversible, unlike my old Prelude's (RIP) FWD-ness. Assuming no tranny problems, anyone know how far you can take the motor? Is the open deck a problem before the actual internals, or the other way around?

Have a look at www.spdusa.com ....it's got a good explanation of where the power limitations are.
The Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP) sold in the UK takes the engine up to 260 lb-ft of torque and you get to keep your warranty - shame Subaru of America doesn't have anything similar over here.

Prodrive Power Packs are warranted for parts only, by Prodrive. They are considered aftermarket parts and your warranty can, and most likely will, be denied once they are installed.

Trick is in the tuning
The trick is in the tuning. There are a few folks that have gotten up in the high 300 and low 400 hp range on stock internals. This with many drag strip passes and Nitrous. They however tuned the car very carefully and avoided detonation.
Give the car good fuel, and tune carefully to avoid lean out and detonation under high load and you should do okay.
There are folks that have broken pistons on very low modifications so it is mostly the driver, and how the car is tuned.
The EJ20 does not tolerate much detonation. Take care to avoid that and you can make some descent power.
The same goes with the 5MT. There are people that have broken more than one transmission on a basically stock car and folks (see above) that have put mulitiple drag strip passes in the high 11's on the stock gear box.
It is not so much fragile as that it does not let you get away with many mistakes.
