Downpipes, uppipes, etc help?
Hey, as you can probablt tell, I'm new here, I previously owned a 1999 Honda civic Si, and made the switch to a 2002 WRX. I love my choice! Anyway, I wanna make my exhaust more efficient, I was thinkin Carbon Ti, and I am confused about up and down pipes. If I get a downpipe, is that similar to a Honda test pipe? Also, Is it good to replace downpipe and uppipe? Does HKS make a good down and up pipe? Thanks

If I am right the Honda test pipe was used to replace a cat on the Honda exhaust system. Check this link out it will probably help you.

I don't know anything about HKS parts for the WRX. I notice that a lot of WRX owners use parts from companies that feature WRX mods as a big part of their business. Off the top of my head, companies that come to mind for exhaust are Perrin, TurboXS, Vishnu Performance, and Cobb Tuning.
Even though the basics of performance tuning and handling still apply to the WRX, it is a different type of animal from your Honda. For instance, a common first performance mod for Hondas is a cold-air intake. This mod isn't quite as universally accepted among WRX owners - it's an ongoing debate. I also don't see as many mildly modified cars with strut tower braces.

OH, to answer your question though..... for the sake of performance, I would not go with the HKS "downpipe" (will be referred to simply as a downpipe for the sake of reason) nor the HKS uppipe. Both are not of the greatest quality, nor does the downpipe have a Bellmouth. So in effect, the only thing you are doing is switching out a pipe that is basically the same design as the factory downpipe, but removing two cats.
Go with something that has a bellmouth, and/or separate wastegate pipe.
I went with the PDE uppipe, and the Bosal Twin Dump Downpipe (yes, it is an actual downpipe) I opted to leave the factory midpipe in, because it doesn't impede airflow by all that much, and it still gives me that 'environmentally friendly' look.
Hope this helps
