Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

What do you think of this set up?

After i get my accessport which is soon i want to do a few mods before i upgrade the turbo. I want to do up pipe/down pipe right after the AP. I want to stick with 1 company the whole way thru if possible. I also want to pass my emissions. I am considering going with The bosal up pipe and the bosal shorty downpipe. I know bosal is a good quality company and there products are reasonably priced. Let me know what you guys think? Thanks.

Sounds good. I like the Bosal up because of the heat shields.

I have yet to hear of someone with just the main cat fail the "sniffer" test. Most people wouldn't know where to look for the down pipe so your visual inspection (if NY has one) should be fine. And the AP will take care of your CELs.

Good to know. I just wasnt sure how strict our emissions might be. Now i'd really like to go to stage 2 after all that but im not really sure if i can with a Cat back.

The catback isn't the problem, it's the down pipes. A catback exhaust does not increase emissions at all because they attach to the back of the last cat.

Most down pipes on the market remove the second and third cats. You can spend more money on some with high flow cats.... or you can get something like a Bosal Shrty or a gutted stock dp to maintain that third cat.

Is the bosal downpipe worth the money or would gutting my stocker be just as effective?

The Bosal dp is very good quality from what I've read. Honestly, I only went with a gutted dp because we have a visual inspection to go along with a "sniffer" test hear in CA. A gutted dp was just a guaranteed way to pass the visual. Most likely, the guy wouldn't have noticed a shiney new dp, but I didn't want to take any chances.

A gutted dp is a good way to go if you have the situation descibed above AND if you don't plan on going any higher than a Cobb Stg. 2 set up. It gives you virtually the same performance as the aftermarket ones when you stay around the 230whp mark. Any higher and it will start to choke your performance.

If you go catless, you will be breaking the smog laws...you are not allowed to remove the cats. Keep the stock parts handy just in case. Try to find an NY forum that may know more about NY's smog laws and how to pass them.

As far as keeping the same "brand", that is not important at all. In most cases, a pipe is a pipe. Pick based on how it fits and how it sounds. Once you get your catless uppipe and turboback, get a protune, you wont be dissapointed

This may seem like a dumb question. Lets say i wanted to clear out my up pipe, what exactly would i have to do? I figure i will leave my downpipe alone until i can get enough $ for the bosal shorty DP.

Go with the bosal and keep the stocker so when you have smog then you can replace it if you want. dont worry about the uppipe because the sti and 06 wrx are catless so you have to worry about that. If you want just drive your car a little hard b4 you take it in to smog to make sure! youll be fine! At least your not here in california where you cant mod without breaking the law

Good point, definitly drive around for a good 20 or 30 minutes to get the exhaust saturated with heat. This will definitly help you out durring the sniffer test.

But he still should swap out the up pipe (or gut it) since he has an '04.
