detonation between 4500-5200?
is anyone else getting any knock at full throttle using 93 octane in a 2004 wrx? it's very audible with the windows open in my car.
ive heard rumors that this is normal on the sti but not sure if anyone else experiences it in the standard wrx. the knock is followed by a large but brief drop in power while the computor pulls timing or whatever it decides to do. then it pulls hard again. this is very annoying.
i'm very dissappointed that my brand new car pre-detonates the car has about 6000 miles on it now. octane booster doesnt even help. it seems 94 octane sunoco may be an answer but still testing it.

Have you brought it to the dealer you bought it from? This is definitly not normal, your in fact the first non-sti owner ive heard complain about an 04 pinging/detonating. I would go and complain, maybe your maps are out of wack for some reason or a sensor went bad. Have you tried reseting the ecu?

audible knock not good
Audible knock on a turbocharged car is a bad bad thing. If its a new car, talk to your dealer, it should not be doing that on proper fuel.
On the 2002 wrx it took 17 - 18 psi, on an 85 degree day pulling a steep hill, to make 91 octane knock here at 5800 ft altitude and the ecu would immediately pull timing ( you'd hear 3 faint ticks and that is all).

yeah i haven't taken it to the dealer because it it only does it every once in a while on a very hot or humid day. i've worked at a few dealerships and i havent found too many that i trust. i have a feeling when i take it in it wont duplicate the problem for them and i will be back at step one.
will unhooking the battery completely reset the ecu or just kind of? i've done that. or do i need to take it to the dealer to reset it completely. this is my first japanese car. i have had only german cars over the years, so i'm used to bosch electronics. i'm still learning my way around the denso stuff.

Um if i am correct there are two wire harnesses under your steering column. ONe is green the other is black. There is a male green and you have to plug that into the female green. Then there is a black male and you have to plug that into a black female. Turn the igniation but dont start the car hold down the throttle for 30 secds then start the car.
Drive around going faster then 13mph for 5 min or so. You should see the check engine light flash in 1/2 secd intervals. This should happen right away so keep driving for a few minutes.
With the WRX u might want to drive faster then 13mph maybe like 90mph to teach your car who is boss.
Your ECU is now reset

i know there is a different ecu in my 04 than the 02 and 03. maybe the way in which it works is similar to the sti ecu. sunoco 94 seems to be working really well for me right now.
i appreciate all the responses. i'd still like to hear from anyone with a standard non sti if they are experiencing this problem in stock form.
