Cobb Stage 2 and CEL
Hey guys...
Well I got an 02 wagon and just finished putting in the Cobb stage 2 with the following goodies...
Samco I/C hoses, Helix flex uppipe and bellmouth downpipe, and HKS HiPower catback. WOW!!! What a difference...well worth the money and time.
Only problem is now I have the dreaded CEL. I looked to make sure everything is connected (Vacuum and exhaust related) and can't hear or see any leak. Cobb said the reflash should take care of everything, so just wondering if anyone else has the same problem.
Also, my stuff from Helix came with a CEL fix. Some kind of resistor for the second O2 sensor. Do I need to add this or is there something else I need to look at?
Thanks for the help and all the great posts.

I think you might have answered your own question.
IIRC the CEL doesnt usually come on that fast. I could be wrong though.
Try and install the CEL fix and let us know. (you might have to reset the ECU) Or it's possible it will turn off on its own.
Keep us posted

Yeah, I'm gonna put it in tomorrow and let ya know what happens. I plan on diconnecting the battery and letting all the codes clear.
Main reason I'm wondering though is Cobb said the reflash "should" take care of the fact that the car is catless. That's why I'm wondering if I maybe missed something else. Especially since I had parts sprawled all over my garage and a couple of hoses were disconnected that I really didn't remember undoing. Man, I'm gettin too old for this stuff...
Oh well, the O2 splice should just take about 15-20 minutes, so I should know pretty quick...

I got a CEL after my stage 2 reflash as well... I live locally so i just drove back down to their shop and they just reflashed it again for free to widen the sensitivty of the 02 or whtever..... they said some cars seem to be more sensitive than others.... a couple weeks later while hauling at high altitude it came on again. I went back in and they reflashed it to just ignore the 02 code altogether, haven't had any problems since. If you've got the time/patience you can just send your ECU back to them and have them reflash to ignore that code (provided it IS actually the cat-inefficiency error). Might be easier to just try the resistor mod though.
I think the Stg2 flash just sets the 02 sensitivity to a much wider range so that if you're runnign catless it'll ignore the last 02 sensor unless you're really out of whack. But my car was way out beyond what most cars are for some reason. They said i was one of only a few they've seen that were still hitting out that far, but fixed it for no charge. They're pretty cool guys. I know that they're incredibly busy these days though. Not sure if that makes a difference, but might be useful info.
EDIT: For what it's worth my only mods at the time were PDE uppipe, Bosal downpipe, Prodrive muffler, silencer hack and K&N

Well, I put the resistor in for my rear O2 sensor today....still had the CEL. So, called Cobb and they told me to go to Autozone and have my computer scanned to get the code. Didn't know they did that, and it was free. Anyway, turns out the code was being generated by the EGT sensor (guess I banged it up when I put the new uppipe in). So, just went to Radio Shack and got a 2.2K Ohm resistor and put it in the harness. Reset the computer and VIOLA! no more CEL.
The guys at Cobb are great and let me know the problem and the fix in like a minute. Plus, the car is running awesome.
Thanks for the imputs and the help...

have ya had a chance to take it to the track? if so what are your 1/4 mile times? i too have an 02 wrx wagon with a turo back exhaust (HKS) and drop-in K&N filter. my best time , and have only been to the track once, is a 14.6. it kind of ruff learning how to leave the line at full boost, no gauge. i am thinking about going with the Cobb. let me know thanks in advance.

Haven't been to the track yet, BUT...I did test drive an Evo and mine feels as fast if not faster. Plus, my computer is still in learning mode so it should get faster as the days progress.
I've been an American muscle car guy, so it's kinda hard for me to judge the way this car feels, but SOTP (seat of the pants), I'd guess mid to low 13s at 102-105 range.
From what I gather, most of the increase is in the computer...I'd really recommend sending yours off to Cobb for the reflash. For $400 ya just can't beat it.
Also, I have the full Helix up and down pipe without cats and the IC hoses.
I'll post numbers when and if I get a chance to do the dash...
Take it easy

cool sounds good. i am currently waiting for my engine to cool down and then i am starting the install of a STI TMIC i won off ebay. its has almost twice the cooling capacity as the stock wrx intercooler. it should make things easier for the engine but i have been told it does not do too much as far as lower et's at the track. let me know what your times are when ya get a chance to run.
