Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Do you have an autotrans? I know that the white smoke can also come from automatic trans. fluid. Sometimes, where there's a vacuum line attached to the tranny, if the vacuum solenoid is bad, it can suck up the autotrans fluid into the engine and create white smoke.

Question

I'm having the same problem right now. Clouds of blue-ish white smoke, no noises, no loss of power, no visible leak, smells like unburnt gasoline.
Just had my 30,000 mile service done about 2000 miles ago (oil change, coolant change, etc) and they said my car was running as well as it ran the day I bought it.
My mods are: up-pipe, HKS catback, downpipe w/ one cat, and SUS short ram.
I'm having it towed to the dealership right now, I'll let y'all know whats up when they call me.

I love my WRX but it's been nothing but trouble...and I've taken excellent care of it, an unfortunate incident with an icy road and a curb notwithstanding.

I'm not sure I'll purchase another subaru after this.

ASM called me back, there's oil in my exhaust BEFORE the turbo...that's not good.

Maybe I blew a seal...but I swear up and down I didn't do anything with that penguin! (har har har...)

I have some non-subie techs (at the dealership I work at) telling me there's no way in hell an exhaust and uppipe/downpipe combo should cause blown piston rings (which is what it's more and more looking like it is) and that I should fight SOA about the warrantee. Any luck/horror stories?

dont think you need to worry. i think your catless... and lots of people report seeing smoke when they are catless. IMO its nothing major.

They probably won't do anything under warranty for you since you have mods on the car.

The SUS intakes are nice, and do make power on the stock cars, but they do this via leaning out the AF ratio.. Lean condition may affect the integrity of the ringlands

can you clear something up for us all... are you getting smoke at start up or while driving?

TIA

at startup, also at idle. then, after the car's been idling for a while and I step on the gas, clouds and clouds of smoke. then not so much when driving.

it's sure acting like a blown ring.

jigga, i'd like to see where the SUS leans out the A/F ratio. The EJ20 with a stock ECU runs a closed loop (14:1 or something close to that) at part throttle, and an open loop at full throttle. Yeah, the SUS allows more air to the combustion chambers, but the ECU will compensate for that through the MAF sensor and so long as I'm not already overpowering the injectors and running them at a 100% duty cycle, the injectors will supply more fuel to go along with more air. If the SUS just increased airflow and the ECU didnt' compensate with more fuel, you'd just see a lean condition and no extra power.

aight, Delray Subaru got back to me today. The stock turbo overheated due to the catless up-pipe, and blew the internal gaskets out. That's believable. It would have been ~$1000 to replace the stock turbo, parts and labor.

Naturally, I couldn't do that. End result? There's an IHI VF34 on its way to my house, along with 565cc injectors and a 255lph fuel pump.

I'm getting them installed at the dealership i work at (it's a GMC/Pontiac/Honda/Nissan place but the techs are good. After all the stuff's in it, I'm gonna drive (carefully) over to Mastro and have them run an ECUTek reflash with dyno time.
