Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

So if one were to revert to factory TBE, but keep aftermarket catless UP installed, what would be the proper map to run? You couldn't run the stock map or else you will get codes from not having a cat right? Would AP stage 1 map work? Also, remind me again how many miles you need to drive after resetting ECU in order to be eligible for smog testing.

You would likely be okay as long as you don't hit boost while driving to the smog shop.

In my experience, you need to drive the car for about 300mi before it tests itself.

He smogged the car, I passed the emissions part, but failed because I had recently reset the ECU and it hadnt performed the diagnostic tests.
Out of curiosity, what were your smog numbers with the TurboXS cat? Were you well under the limits or borderline?

I don't know the smog numbers right off the top of my head, but I know that all of them, with the exception of one, were well under the limits. One of the categories was 1ppm away from being at the max.

Keep in mind that the setup had well over 90k on it, so the cat was likely not performing as well as a new setup.

Helix Catted DP passes

I have a catted V1 Helix DP and a gutted uppipe, with a ECUTECK tuned by Mike when he was at Gruppe-S.

It passed after being warmed up and run between 2400-2800 in P/N for 3 minutes.
The number's were
@ idle HC measured 16ppm, CO 0.00%, CO2 13.5%, O2 1.7%
@2500 HC measured 10ppm, CO 0.01%, CO2 14.5%, O2 .30%

The cat is 4 years old with 30,000 +/- miles on it

The HC and CO were well below the max

Thanks for posting your results. They are really close to my car, which had all three OEM cats at the time of the test.

My numbers:
@ idle HC measured 14ppm (100ppm Max), CO 0.01% (1.00% Max), CO2 15.1%, O2 0.0%
@2500 HC measured 0 ppm (130ppm Max), CO 0.00% (1.00% Max), CO2 15.1%, O2 0.0%

The car had 117,771 miles with all original cats.

Now I know what catted downpipe I should buy.

I just passed on the second smog test in CA for my stage 2 04 wagon with maddad v2 downpipe catted and sti uppipe. On first the test, I failed the functional monitor test(had a dead battery earlier) and had to drive it about 100 miles to reset the check monitors. Finally I still passed but the HC levels were slightly high: HC max 100 measured at 81-85(second test). I didn't have to change my accessport stage 2 map to pass and I'll probably have to add the third cat to pass for the next test in 2 years. Good thing the price of smog tests is going down if you shop around, as it cost me $18.75 for first test(fail) and $34.95 for the successful test!

My Maddad v2 dp is a 2 piece dp with cat in the front piece and no cat in the lower . All I have to do is to swap the 3rd cat in and it's much easier to do!

Jumpin' in late here. Almost 2 years ago my wife brought our 02 wrx in for smog with Cobb tbe, gutted up and flashed to stage 2. Had about 125,000 miles on it. I don't remember the #s, but it passed fine. I wonder how many more of those I'll get?

ok if your in california you must pass a visual and tailpipe emissions test which means you can fail just by having a modded exhaust system. most smog techs won't fail your visual if there is a highflo cat installed (ask ahead of time or find a place that someone recommends don't pay for a test and get failed by some lil jerk with a god complex ) from what i hear the helix will pass tailpipe emissions as long as your map is done right. now here is the best part, our cars are all wheel drive and smog stations only have a 2 wheel dyno which means we only have to pass at idle and 2500 rpm
just for info my WRX was catless at first and then i went to a helix catted DP and only lost 5hp so its not that much of a loss atleast on a motor producing around 350 hp

I was able to pass smog with a stage 2 setup, it included a up-pipe, helix catted dp, catback, cobb ap, and a hallman mbc in terms of emission.

BUT! I failed in visuals..... So in the end i had to put the stock dp, catback, and boost solenoid in order to fully pass...

You gotta drive the car for about a week to two weeks. There's a bunch of things that the ECU checks for before it's "ready". The only way I know of to get it in Readiness mode is to drive around for a while.

There might be easier and quicker ways around it. Anyone feel free to chime in.
