Bogus free mods?
Hi, new here, I'm posting for a friend of mine. he got this e-mail claiming "free" mods with big HP gains. In searching, some sounds like specifically the "gutting the cat" parts.
Any thoughts on these? will they wreck his WRX?
Chapter 1: (Raising the Boost)
What Will It Do For Your Car?
This simple modification will help improve your acceleration and adds 3 pounds of boost to your turbo, which is roughly 45 hp.
Instructions:
Step 1: Look at the lower left hand corner on your intercooler.
Step 2: Just Past it you will see a T where three hoses plug into.
Step 3: Unplug the hose that would be what the T stands on (also can be identified because it is perpendicular to the two parallel hoses)
Step 4: After you unplug that hose, you will realize that the hose you have unplugged is really two hoses with a joiner in the middle.
Step 5: Pull apart the two hoses and remove the connector from the hose still remaining attached to your car. (the connector can be left in if you wish but will restrict airflow and lessen power)
Step 6: The Hose that is still attached to your car let it just hang free inside your engine
Question: How exactly does this mod work?
Answer: Your turbo is set to run approximately 13 psi out of the factory; however, the turbo is capable of running 17 psi safely (Subaru Technicians Manual). Therefore this mod allows you to max out your turbo at 17 psi without purchasing something costly like a boost controller. This modification is like a boost controller except for the fact that it can't be adjusted. For Example if you want to run 15 psi, you could not achieve this medium between stock and the maximum safe running boost. You can only run 13 with the hose in or 17 with the hose out.
Question: Will this mod significantly decrease the lifespan or my Turbo?
No, this mod does make your turbo work harder but the same is true when adding a boost controller. Anyone who upgrades their WRX without upgrading their turbo is making their turbo work a lot harder.
Chapter 2: (Exhaust Modifications)
Intro: The WRX possess 3 catalytic converters. There are two in the down pipe and one in the up pipe. To hollow out these cats provides a sure 20 horsepower.
Clearing the catalytic converters from the down pipe will provide an easy 10 to 12 horsepower while keeping great stock reliability, since it is after all a stock part still.
NOTE: Please wear a mask when chiseling out the catalytic converters because sometimes the fumes have a potential for causing cancer.
Chapter 3: (Intake)
Removing some simple parts from your intake system will allow the engine to get more horsepower as well.
Instructions:
Step 1: Follow your intake system to the front of your car.
Step 2: The front piece is like a straw bent four times take that piece off.
Step 3: The next piece which is inside of your side fender can be removed as well.
Step 4: It will allow the intake system to get at least 10 more hp to the engine.
The removal of these two pieces will add ten horsepower (approx 15 horsepower with filter removal). This is another great addition to your car.
So far the total cost is: 0 dollars
What every car owner dreams of.
Chapter 4: (Resetting the ECU)
Instructions:
NOTE: It's important that you closely follow these steps closely or you will not do it correctly. If you do not feel a power increase the first time try it again.
Step 1: Remove the negative cable from your battery.
Step 2: Leave it unplugged for an hour and then plug it back on.
Step 3: Start your car (DO NOT HIT THE GAS)
Step 4: Wait for the fans to come on.
Step 5: When the fans shut off turn the car off.
Step 6: Restart the car and drive it fast and always pedal to the metal or this will not work. Driving it hard allows your ECU to know where the maximum power is and how much to allow.
Step 7: NEVER GO PARTIAL THROTTLE
Step 8: Always keep the pedal to the medal.if you have to go slow then let the car glide
(NOTE: Always break or stop if necessary, 30 horsepower is never worth damaging your car or risking physical harm.)
With the changes you have made this will reset your ECU to give you more power. You will achieve approximately 20 at least hp from resetting your ECU correctly. After driving it really hard and never part throttle for about a mile turn it off and then you can restart it and your ECU will be reset for more power.
NOTE: Although all these changes have undergone extensive testing we do not insure any damage that may be caused to your car by making any of these changes.

I'm not sure how reliable the 17lbs of boost statement is but removing the intake silencer (fender well) seems to help it breath a little better and is a free mod. gutting the cats (especially on the uppipe) is a lot of work, and you're still stuck with the stock DIA uppipe and downpipe. the nice thing about replacing them is that the overall DIA of the aftermarket pipes is larger and there is no cat at all...and the last thing you want is pieces of that uppipe cat getting sucked into the turbo.

free mods
some time ago there was a post regarding free horsepower(no cost to owner).has anyone tried those mods? what results did you have? i would like to try these but my fear is having a CEL arise.it seems that quite a few people who have modded their cars experienced CEL's.it would be a pain in the a$$ to get to my dealership. thanks to all of those who reply.

Taking a few extra moments to make your question understood will probably result in appropriate responses, thanks.

ok heres a little more, i own an 04 wrx 5spd completely stock that i bought after selling my S4.the thread seems to be truthful about the mods that can be done to extract some power from a stock turbo. i was hoping someone tried this and will respond with his/her results.thanks

That post is the biggest bunch of ish I have ever read. I turned the boost up with a manual boost controler on my 04 and the car got slower. The ECU kept pulling timing. I think that guy is full fo it.

chapter 1 is a quick way to blow up your engine. it allows the turbo to build as much boost with absolutely NO controls on it. This mod will cause the car to run very lean and have very high exhaust gas temperatures, both of which are very dangerous to the engine. It will also allow the turbo to build full boost at partial throttle, exactly opposite of what the ECU is programmed to do.
you should refer your friend to a site called www.scoobymods.com there's a bunch of free mods on there that actually work.
