deadbolt ported stock turbo, or a VF23/24.
i have a deadbolt unit, and it works quite well. boost comes on nice and early, enough so that i can often get away with using second gear in hairpins that i used to have to downshift into first for. without upping boost, you won't see much of an increase in peak hp, but you'll get a much broader powerband. you can run this with the stock ecu and injectors easily (i am right now), but to get the most out of it you'd need a reflash and STi injectors.
the vf23/24 are two of the quickest spooling VF series turbos, they'll spool just a bit later than a stock turbo. deadbolt can port these too, to the tune of like $200. i've heard that you can run these with he stock fuel system, but i don't think i would. you'll get more peak power here, but i don't know as much about the width of the powerband.

VF34 is my favorite performer for the all round WRX. Plenty of pull around town and nice performer at the track/strip.

If you could find a nice, cheap, new VF23 to have P&P'd THAT would a real good upgrade, I should think, too You'd need injectors, a pump and EM for that one, though.

i'd thought about going with a P&P VF24 before i bought the deadbolt TD04. i didn't have the cash to throw down on injectors, pump and EM all at once on top of the turbo. if i had, thats what i'd be running. from all the research that i did, that combo should give you one hell of a bump in midrange hp and torque.

Clipping turbo's is generally not a good thing to do it may add some increased flow potiential but will take away from the overal efficeincy causing lag.

No lag here...The P&P more(far more) than makes up for the bit of clip I almost never wait for boost, and it does a great job of holding boost a lot better towards redline which is the best benifite of the clip.
A big, broad power band is what I've got

Glad it works for you, a better actuator would have held the boost till redline though then you would get the benifits of the porting not countering the ineffiecency of clipping.
