Best Oil Filter?
I have been looking forward to changing the fluid in my fiance's differentials and the gear oil in the tranny to Amsoil full synthetic which I think it a vastly superior product to many other synthetic oils out there in the market. I will evenyually change her oil from Mobil 1 to Amsoil when the car is due for another oil change. (She recently had it changed before she moved in with me so I didn't have time to stop her from having the dealer perform the work). My question is this: Which performance oil filters do you all prefer to use in on the EJ20T? Right now she is running a Subaru OEM filter. Her car is an '02 WRX wagon with the 5-speed manual. Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks for the input. It will be that much easier since I won't have to custom order another filter and I can just pick one up at the Scooby dealer around the corner. I have another question though. Should I bother replacing the stock filter element. The car is only a lease and I my fiance will only have it for another year so I don't want to replace the entire induction system, but I would spend the cash on a K&N or Perrin element if it would help fuel economy and slightly increase performance and throttle response. Please let me know any experience you may have had with this to help me decide which way to go! Thanks again.

Has anyone tried a Canton-Mecca cartridge filter on the EJ20 yet? I have used these for years on my race-VW motors, and they have saved my *** on the dyno once or twice when a cam lobe laid over. These are beautiful units, will replace Fram HP1 or System 1 type, they have no pressure bypass valve, are made of a very heavy cast body with aluminum cap, and special replaceable cartirdge element that you can inspect for debris. These filters are famous in the drag and circle-track world, but I don't know if there is a compatible unit for the EJ20.

Do a bit of research prior to making the switch.
My 2¢
YMMV
I use purolator 14460 or equivalent oil filter.

Uncle Scotty,
Thanks for the heads up about changing the gear lube to a synthetic. I have never heard that happening to anyone and It would really have sucked to have spent all that extra coin on the synthetic just to have to dump it. I will talk to my Scooby dealer and find out what they have to say. Have you heard of anyone having problems changing the gear oil in the differentials to a synthetic and having it cause problems?
Thanks again! - Adam

royal purple in tranny and rear diff. Tranny runs fine, no first gear grinding. Never had that prob anyway. I almost always double clutch. Could be in the manner the tranny is treated and why it fails on some. Reverse goes in way better then before. Had it in for about 3000 miles now.

ScoobyStas,
Did you use the Max Gear 75W90 or something else. I asked the service dept manager at my local Scooby dealer what he recomended if I was going to switch to synthetic and he gave me the standard party line answer of "I would recomend staying with the factory gear oil" which is about what I expected. I KNOW that synthetics are superior and I appreciate your posting. Was there a noticible difference in the feel of the shifting in the forward gears or only the reverse gear. Also, was there any noticable change in the noice levels of the tranny when the synchros spun up or not? The reason I ask is that when my borther switched his engine oil in his diesel pickup to pure synthetic, it reduced the overall noise levels DRAMATICALLY. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it for myself. Thanks again for your input!

What do you mean?
I am changing my oil now actually, 6018 miles! :-( 18 over ... I hope that does not harm my car....
I will look at the fram compared to the new OEM oil filter that I have sitting here.
Thanks,
