from what i have heard, using an aftermarket bov will help cause backfires. but if you are backfiring, then you are running rich. plus the car runs rich stock.

well, i have a similar set-up, however, i have an N1 and running catless. my afterfires are pretty loud, i scare half the block i think. the N1 exhaust is pretty loud in itself. i also have a 100% atmospheric which just adds to the richness. with upgraded injectors and turbo, i should be having some fireballs coming out from the back along with that loud POW! it's pretty cool sometimes.

I believe flames out the exhaust track = after fire
Ignition in the intake track (carbuerated engines) = backfire

would you still be able to spit out flames with the stock turbo and stock fuel system would you have to upgrade both the turbo and fuel system? just wondering because i'm totally catless and have a hell of a loud afterfire, but not sure if there are those little fire ***** out the exhaust. not like i want them, but just a little wonder of mine.

You could do it on a nearly stock car. Add catless exhaust and an atmo BOV and you'll get it all the time. It's a matter of having unburned fuel in the exhaust stream that spontaneously ignites from hitting the hot metal. Usually this happens when it hits the cat (that's actually what it's supposed to do- it's how it works) but if you remove them, it gets louder. Even my RS with factory cat, Borlas, and Magnaflow gets a lot of popping from fuel hitting the cat.

Talking

I have gruppe-s up pipe - no cat
HKS 3" down pipe - no cat
Apexi N1 cat back
Stock fuel
I shoot flames quite often, they usually stay in or about 1-3" out of the exhaust, they look sweet

i have the same also:

catless up-pipe
helix downpipe
apex N1 3" custom turboback

is it me or is the N1 exhaust system (catless) a raspy sounding exhaust. i sort of love it though. sounds cool. how does your set-up sound, raspy? also, how did you notice you were shooting flames? i wonder if i'm shooting little flame ***** too?

i have two questions. 1) If i remove my Turboxs RFL blow off valve, will it stop the back-firing? 2) I seem to backfire whenever I downshift pretty hard at a high RPM. Is this a backfire or an afterfire?

First my friends were driving behind me and saw it. Then I parked it an had my buudy rev it to 7,000 three or four times and it shot fire. From what I have read between 2nd and 3rd in hard driving is when you are most likely to shoot. And if you do that you can hear it shoot. I like the 4cyl boxter growl that the Apexi has. It dosnt sound like any other 4 out there.
