4-2-1 or 4-1 headers/manifold?

My uppipe's already catless, thanks
Honestly, I think my car's quite noticably preppier than stock with zero cat in the system, but I still want to get rid as much as lag as possible.

i meant the other way around, some top end power is lost....my bad

Anyway, to answer your question, my car's mostly stock...
... stock JDM STi that is.
VF30, Cusco catless downpipe, 100% stock (catless) uppipe, 100% stock catback, drop-in STi panel filter, DIY CAI intake, EBC <--won't affect my decision, or will it?
I'm boosting VERY mildly (only about 17psi) because the JDM ECU doesn't like fuel grade of anything less than 100RON (locally available fuel: 98RON).
I know mostly from reading that ECU tuning is crucial to extract max performance out of manifold upgrade; this will come months after the manifold upgrade (reason: waiting for STi 7 ECUTEK maps to be tested out thoroughly first).

Yeah another guy I emailed sent me some pictures of it, unless that was you. It's basically a Syms replica. It's the same header they sold for the GC8 WRX and there are a ton of people selling a version of it for the GDA WRX, I'm not sure who the original manufacturer for the replica header is, could be RSR for all I know. The actual Syms header is very expensive and doesn't fit the US car. I had a version of the header and it didn't fit the car. A couple other vendors selling the same replica ran into the same issues and have since fixed the fitment problems. Where did you purchase the header from?

Anyone has any opinions on the Syms headers? It's 4-1, looks like equal length, integrated uppipe; in short it does look like the Maxim headers.
Impreza Magazine tests rate the Syms headers highly (IIRC third or second only to Zerosports in power and torque), and my Japanese supplier recommends it.

Syms makes an excellent product. As for the manufacturer, I know who it is (we deal with them), but am sworn to secrecy...the quality of the one we sell (there are copies of the copies too remember!) is excellent...no dyno numbers, but good gains across the board. At under $1000.00, its a good value for dollar...to pay more than that without upgrading from the VF30 would be a mistake IMHO, as your value for dollar plummets. Since you are in Japan, 2 other noteworthy units are Fujitsubo and HKS....Fujitsubo offers both 4-1, and 4-2-1. The 4-2-1 should delivery slightly better down low power, the 4-1, will ultimately give you better top end pull, assuming you ahve a turbo to flow enough air.

I've attached a pic of the stock GC8 manifold below. GDB's (STi 7) stock manifold looks just about the same.
The stockers are an inefficient design; the boxer engine layout results in one bank of cylinders (2 and 4 if not mistaken) are closer to the uppipe than the other bank (1 and 3 naturally). I guess Subaru saves cost by 'shortcutting' the exhaust path (which incidentally gives rise to the distinctive boxer throb = ricey/uncalled for if you ask me, since it robs away power).
The Maxim Works (and Syms I was told) are of equal length design. Frankly I'm not so sure of the exact physics behind the benefit of the design but here's what I've been reading:
The equal length pipes mean less interference between the left and right banks' exhaust, thus exhaust flow is more efficient (faster?), resulting in increased revability in low revs plus better turbo spool-up.
Attn experts: if the above info is misleading, please correct me, because I myself want to know the real facts.

Thks GDB! which means no matter what u get WRX or STI...header has to go right ...replace with equal length....ideally MAXIM or SYMS by all means....
how about the turbo in STI V7/ r they using IHI VF??? or something else......I remember some post said STI V7 some with VF30, some said VF34...??!! what about type RA and the new facelift STI???

The following info is the best to my knowledge:
JDM STi and STi RA (pre-Spec C) use VF30
STi Spec C uses VF34
Euro STi uses VF35
Not sure of the exact model of the new STi, but I believe it's made by IHI, and it's definitely a twin-scroll design.
Back to the headers discussion...
I am always under the impression that the stock headers HAVE to go. But I have come across a few posts claiming that the headers did nothing to their cars, or worse still they result in loss of low-end.
The purpose of this thread is exactly that: to iron out all rumors/facts regarding header upgrade.
