350 miles so far...
Just got a WRX. Does changing the oil at 1000 miles really help. If so, would putting Synthetic oil like Mobil 1 be the best option? Is synthetic oil, a good choice for a high output 4 cylinder?
What oil do you use?

changing the oil at 1000 is really up to you. i dont think it does any harm if you change it that early.
im currently using regular motor oil. switching to synthetic is a good idea. there has been some arguements about when was a good time to make the switch.

I break my cars in by:
1. Not running the A/C
2. Not running the Cruise Control
3. Not over rev'ing the engine (the manual states 4.5k rpm)
4. Not running the engine at constant rpm's
5. Varying the speed of the car over longer trips
6. Warming the car up fully before driving the car (normally 5min)
7. Cooling down the car before shutting it off (normally 2-3 min)
#6 is due more to the fact that it has been cold around here in Indianapolis.
As far as oil goes, I think I have heard everything about what oil to use and when to change it. I have been told by Nissan techs to change the oil every 5k mi for normal oil (I am still trying to figure that out). People tend to advise changing the oil after the break-in period in order to flush any foreign particles that may be present in the engine block. I would think with the tight tolerances we have today along with the technology in building engines that this would not be a problem. With that said, what would it hurt by changing the oil early? My buddy (ASE certified) told me to use regular oil and switch to synthetic after 10k mi. This gives you time to condition your seals and gaskets. I personally use full synthetic in my WRX and Nissan 240. I use Durablend (semi-synthetic) in my Nissan Altima (QR25DE), since I do not race this car. I am not saying that this advice is appropriate for everyone; you need to determine what you will be doing with your car. If anyone has any comments or further suggestions about this topic, I would love to hear them.

As far a s breaking in goes I say drive it gently but not like a granny. Slowly build up rpms occasionaly take it to redline just not at wide open throttle. Dragging is defimnately no tthe best idea. From what ive heard from people is that you can loose horsepower if you dont go over 4k. Think of it like your power tools gotta let the battery run all the way down to get full life.
As far as the oil change goes a synthetic may be a bit heavy during break in.
