04 wrx ques.
im having a blast with my new rex...its my first turbo and awd car..its been fun and i still havent even taken it over 4k rpms yet...i got a couple of questions ive been reading around and i noticed alot of tranny problems. has this problem been fixed for 04? and are there any other changes besides the headlights? so i wanted to get right in it and start modding my car but im afraid i might be at the dealer for a tranny problem and i dont want to void the warranty. ive had good experiences with HKS parts and i usually only like to put them on my car. these are the first mods i plan on getting a super sequential bov, up pipe, hipower exhaust and super mega flow intake.
so here are some questions
what were ur first mods?
what was the outcome of ur tranny problems? if any
and i would like to get a boost controller but i dont have much experience with turbo and i dont want to over do it... i really dont want to make my rex into a beast i just wanna make it into a reliable daily driver that is good at the track on the weekends and wont back down to the occasional stop light race. thanx for the input

ok sorry for the newbie questions but reflash means i keep my stock ecu correct i just send it in? i work everyday almost and i cant be without my car. so any mods have to be done over the weekend basically...when u reflash the ecu it turns up the boost?

yes. what you have is target boost levels, which is the basically the max boost level that the ECU is programmed for. however, the target boost is reached usually after the ECU has fully learned the new map or it's ignition advance multiplier, which may take from a few weeks to a month to reach after the ECU has been reset. the ignition advance mult. will also increase on how aggressively you drive daily. there's a trick that you can do, search for "ignition advance multiplier" and something by Vishnu tuning should pop up.
the thing about the stock turbo, it reaches it's compressor efficiency range at about 16 psi. so what this means that after this range, you're basically shortening it's lifespan and will need a rebuild very soon. so with a reflash, boost is raised, ignition is more advanced, and a/f ratios are leaner. what a reflash is doing is basically giving you a much more aggressive map.
you could opt for a boost controller, however, it doesn't really give you the most for your money. and you can overboost which is really bad, if you're not careful.

yeah well i drive pretty aggreesively while still keepin it under 4k and it still brings a smile too my face, by aggressively i mean corners and stuff. but everyday i feel the car getting stronger and stronger just tonite i discovered the e-brake =) what a wonderful invention

imagine this. the feel of your car just accelerating out of every gear. the best feel is from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. man, this thing just pulls and keeps pulling. i guarantee that it'll make your eyes go WOW! and that's just the stage 1 upgrade. stage 2 just gets much better. also, low end response is improved. i have the access ecu stage 2 (requires a turboback exhaust). let me tell you, i can hardly feel the lag that's present in stock form. just imagine the acceleration out of the turn with much more torque response. hope this helps.
