02 wrx: Fuel trim malfunction (A/F too lean)

Check engine light coming on and I'm getting the P0171 code (fuel trim malfunction A/F too lean).

What does this mean? I just checked and the air filter to the AEM short air intake was dirty. Cleaned it out and waiting to see if the check engine light will come on again.

any help would be appreciated.

Was the stupid AEM intake that was causing it. Replaced with OEM air intake and worked.

What usually causes this. Both o2 sensors bad? have catless exhaust and cobb stage 2 tune through my ap. still blowing smoke out evey now and then. Last night, my car got to the point where it keeps dying anytime you come to a stop so you have to keep it rev'd. any help would be great.

was the ECU tuned for the shorty air intake?

I wasn't sure, but thought the fantastic Interwebz knowledge said that you need to get tuned for non-stock intakes? I remember reading the AEM intake was "supposed" to be better in that Subiesport intake shootout, but dunno if that the was short ram, or the cold-air (if they even offer one).
