Question UTEC Timing maps and other tuning questions

Anyone familiar with timing maps?

I'm sure it's all the same accross the board so here's the questions:

stock timing maps look like they're way crazy and all over the place. with lots of advance in the low RPM ranges, tapering off to less and less advance around where boost starts to build up, then drastically changing to more and more advance afterwards...

for instance, it looks almost like a reverse "VTEC" shift at 2500RPM where the timing jumps from 19 all the way down to 16~11.5 depending on throttle. Then it gradually moves back up to the 20 range and all the way to 23.5 at 7k rpm and 100% tps.

I always thought the timing maps should be much more smooth and taper DOWN as the rpms and boost go up? or am I wrong? does anyone have a good timing base map for a stock '04 STi?

I also get some pretty bad (IMO) knock at 5250-5500 rpms... and only after being in that RPM range for a while. ???

Ok, I got rid of the knocking. Started with stock stage 1 TXS map, adjusted the target AFR to 11.3 at the 100% load sites tapering all the way to 14.7 at the 0% left the boost map alone at 370 all around, and played with the timing until I didn't get any more knock at the 5500/80% zone.

so now my car feels much smoother after I pulled back some timing. I also decieded to smooth out the timing map a bit so that there's not such large jumps in timing from cel to cel.

I feel like it's lost a bit of pep though, can this happen with just a 1~3 deg of timing change?

I'm actually thinking of leavingthe timing as-is, and start increasingthe target AFRs and removing a lil bit of fuel. I think 11.3 might be a bit rich for a pretty much stock powertrain, so I was thinking of using a target AFR of about 11.5~12.0? would that be okay? I know people run 12.5 w/ WI, but I'm prety much on bone stock everything except I have a header installed. I would want to run a lil more boost too. any tips on the boost map? I read the instructions but still don't completely understand it.

Thanks
