SAFC Install Questions
Hey. Just got my SAFC (Apexi) for my 2002 WRX Wagon and want to install. The instructions are a little Foreign to me and I wanted to know where the Factory Harness is located to splice in the wires from the SAFC. The diagram shows where to place each color wire, but does not say what harness to hook the wires up to! Can anyone help?

I actually have yet to use an afc. I am not sure of all the stuff you can control with it. But I would start out fairly rich and monitor EGT then I would slowly adjust to lean it out. When you get to a maximum exhaust gas temp(EGT) it will start to go down again. Don't go past the maximum. I would assume max will be somewhere around 14-16:1 AFR. That is just a guess though. But if you lean out too much you are going to cause some damage(over extended periods). These are just my thoughts on this. Keep in mind that I have not used an AFC

You're really going to want a way to monitor your A/F ratios, otherwise you're shooting in the dark. I started out running at about 12:1 to be safe. Stock Subaru's run at about 14.7:1, so shoot for around 14 to be safe. Main thing though, you need an A/F monitor. (Apex-i turbo timer has one, it runs like $100 or so) Good luck

I Am putting in my A/F Guage now and the Purple wire from the guage is supposed to get hooked up to a Wir efrom the o2 sensor. There are 4 Wires running to the o2 senson, 2 Black a White and a Blue. Where does the purple wire go to?

Not sure what type of gauge you have, but you're going to want to splice your o2 sensor wire down by the ECU harness in any case. It's probably talking about hooking to the O2 signal wire. I assume you have a wiring diagram, so find which slot is the Front O2 Signal wire on your harness.

Yeah, It's stupid, but no A/F on the S-AFC.

Also there are many wires left after we Installed the SAFC. Has Any one installed a SAFC into a 2002 WRX before?

I had 3 extra wires left after installing it on my 2.2L engine. Remember that Subaru's are hot-wire. Carmen systems, used on DSM's, use 2 of these these extra wires. Also, you'll have another left-over wire from where the S-AFC intercepts the fuel signal, and then puts its own into your ECU. Some cars use 3 wires to accomplish this, while Subes use 2.
Do any of the functions on your S-AFC not work? That should be your first clue. There's no difference in how the WRX and my turbo L are hooked up, besides the ECU pin locations. It would take me a page and a half to check over your work to see if you did it right, so if you want help, PM me.

safc
i too am working on tuning my safc II before the first running of my engine. i am running a 2.2l n/a engine in a 93 legacy. according to the safc install guide, the legacy uses a hw 10 designation in the safc. does this mean that under the sensor no. screen of the safc i put 10 in and 10 out, instead of where it comes as showing 01 in and 01 out? i hope this makes sense to someone.
also, what is maximum egt likely to read, and what is considered an unsafe egt temperature?

oh yeah, btw, on my legacy the wire from the 02 sensor was a white with a silver splash on it. i figured this out by using a multimeter with a continutity tester to trace it back to the ecu, and the color codes match the whole way back... i am afraid that this wont help you on the rex tho...

The EGT is going to depend on a lot of things. Like Ban-Suvs said up there a ways you are better off getting a wideband A/F meter and start it off kind of rich then lean it out to find a maximum. You should get somewhere between 1200-1400 I would assume(and this IS just and assumption) but to be safe I would just slowly lean it out because it is going to be dependant on ambient temp., gas used, humidity, and all sorts of other variables. But if you start rich you should have no problem finding the maximum EGT and then making it a little rich of that maximum to be on the safe side.

I Ordered the Sensor from Auto Meter. They told me to take out the factory O2 sensor and use this bung to house the Wideband. Should I just Drill a new hole in the Mid Pipe and Install it that way? I am worried about the check engine light. ( My car acts weird when the light comes on.)
