Pyrometer install.....downpipe??????
i'm getting ready to install my gauges.....and i'm gonna throw an exhaust temp gauge in.......i was gonna mount it to the downpipe....about 6 inches down from the top. it's an autometer gauge and i can either mount it with a metal clamp or i can weld a bung on the pipe. they are both said to work equally well, do you guys have any opinions on which way to mount it???
the other option i have is to take off the manifold and have it tapped so i can measure the temp there. but i really don't want to take that manifold off. WHAT SHOULD I DO?????
these are autometer gauges going into a 03 WRX. thanks, riggs

the upipe is also not the best place to put it, you will lose some accuracy and it won't react fast enough to let you know you have a problem. You best bet would be to do the drivers side manifold, it's not that hard. I did mine on the passneger side but I had it out to install my uppipe anyway. If you're not comforatble drilling and tapping it yourself take it to a machine shop nad have them do it for you, I don't think it would be more than 30-40 bucks. If you plan on doing it in the downpipe, I would just save your money and spend it elsewhere, it's not going to be of much help that far away from the head. Good Luck-James

ok, the manifold it is!!!! i just talked to my tech guy at the subaru dealer and he said that's where he'd put it!!! he said it wouldn't do anything to my warranty so i'll be pulling the manifold so i can dril/tap it for the sensor probe!!!!! where on the manifold should i drill??????? later, riggs

Most people seem to put it where the casting button is where the pipes come together, you should see it when you get it apart. Others say about 3 inches or so out of the cylinder, the button has a little more to metal there to grab so that's where I did mine. -James

Best exhaust temp is little different from kinds of car, generally exaust temp, gasoline engine 850-900C(1550-1650F), rotary engine 900C(1650F), at full speed. Generally, thick fuel condition or ignition time is early, exhaust temp become high and become low at opposite condition.

oops, I meant I was putting it in the up pipe. I know its better to put in right onto the exhaust manifold, but the Uppipe already has the bung for it. And I don't want to be drilling into the manifold, the car is only 4 months old lol, and if something goes bad, I need to put it back to stock lol.
so has anyone used the auto meter pyrometer in the BPM up-pipe? I know I have to drill the hole a little bigger, but what fittings do u use?

as far as drilling into your manifold and having warrenty issues......you need to jkust ask. before i did anything i called my dealer and told them what i wanted to do and where i wanted to mount the probe. they told me to put it in the manifold and that it WOULD NOT affect my warrenty at all. he said "that's just a measuring device, there is nothing that piece of metal could do to harm your engine" so they were cool as hell about it. i would put it there. like a lot of other people say, if it's not there on the manifold it's really not giving you an acurate reading......so you might as well get a different gauge.
