If you want to keep things relatively cheap, check into deadbolt turbos. They will buy your broken core and send you a new or refurbished one. They can also port and polish, as well as coat the turbo.
As for what you should do, replace it soon. If the wastegate is broken you will tend to overboost and spike. This is a good way to ruin an engine.

why not just replace the wastegate? it's an internal, but still replaceable without having to replace the whole turbo.
check your solenoid (by the intake box under the black cover on a 02) make sure all the connections are good and no cracks in the vaccum lines.
as for the misfire, you might want to change your plugs, if you're moderately modified, go a stage colder copper plugs... when you are changing your plugs, double check the gap and check the coil packs for cracks or burnt marks..

I suspect the reason you misfired is because of overboost cause by a failing wastegate.
If this is the case, then it will happen again. And this is bad.
Porkchop is right though, check the lines and all that. But the wastegate solenoid is probably the culprit. The reason I say replace the turbo instead of replace the w/g is that TD04s are cheap and easy to come by. You could probably replace the whole thing with a nearly new TD04 for the price (or less) than the cost of the w/g. Since turbos only last around 70-100k miles, might as well replace it while you are at it.
I am betting that the misfire came under boost. If so, get yourself fixed soon.

It could still be the hoses running to the wastegate. Sometimes they'll get cracked.
If you are overboosting your EGTs will rocket, which will blow up your engine.
Have you had a chance to look at this yet?

Well, I finally popped my hood and look what I found.....
Looks like it has been disconnected for a long time also (possibly from when I bought the car 3-4 months ago.
