overheating engine.

today it is about 12 degrees and my engine over heated, i have no idea why, is the thermeostat bad, or is there blockage, over night it was about 4 degrees, and windy, my antifreeze mixture is about 50 50 and there was alot missing when i went and filled it back up, today, i dumped it right into the radiator, there was steam coming out of the engine bay before i pulled over, kinda becasue i had no where to pull over to, and the heater was not working either, but eventually it the heater came back on after i filled up some anti freeze, but is still not runnig right.

Find out where your coolant went. A stuck thermostat will cause it to overheat. Did it spit the coolant back out after the engine was driven? If a hose split or it exited out of the overflow reservoir, low coolant level will cause overheating.

there was no coolant leaking out anywhere that i could see, but the resovier was empoty, and there was no coollant in the oil pan i checked that. i will have to look more closely when it warms up a bit here.

if there is no coolant in the oil pan another possibility could be a bad head gasket and the coolant is being burned up in the combustion process. a bad head gasket could cause both coolant in the oil and being burned. but is sounds like u may have a thermostat that failed in the shut position as most do . u should really check for leaks first. u can take it to a shop and have your cooling system pressure checked also.

if it is a bad head gasket, how would you know? the other thing is i have driven it for a while now, and there is no problems at all, i checked the oil a couple of times and the coolant level, and nothing has changed there is no hard starting, nothing the engine runs totaly smooth. is there a way to check it out with out takeing a lot of **** a part just to be sure, i mean could i just take the rocker covers off and look under them? tell me i am all ears:banana:

That is a very unusual situation, if you had white smoke coming out of the exhaust then I would say head gasket. White smoke from the engine bay would be a leak onto something hot. Even though your cooling sysem is running fine now, I would still do a pressure test. Its a quick and easy job.
